28 years ago i went down to Gippsland hunting hog deer...I never went again as i concentrated on sambar and fallow deer.
Well after all that time i took an 8 hour drive with an old mate and had six glorious days of hunting hoggies and connected with the only stag that I saw,I did see quite a few other smaller deer and hinds but declined the hind shot although I had a tag for one.
Excuse the poor pic of the downed stag and hind but thats how he fell.
BTW these are free ranging wild animals.

Hi Gryphon,

Well done, that should make a nice mount. As for the second photo and the hind, you could almost put a caption on it " No more Nookies from him"

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

Matt, the check in station fella is still learning to age them and with his idea at the time he came up with three years...still a baby.

A few sandflies...HEAPS of fuggin March flies and even more mossies accompanied a bloke everywhere.I wore my fly hat with veil as a plus to my face mask thankfully.
One has to have the patience of Jobe.

This deer was taken from a tree stand and i did quite a bit of walking also. 15 deer were sighted by me over six days.

Gryphon,

Congratulations on a good trophy taken the proper way.

He looks older than three years at the eyes anyway. Bloody good set of antlers if he is only three years old too. Again well done.

The stag in your first pic is different from the stag you shot? Looks a lot thinner anyway and no brow tines. Or are you distinguishing between "spikers" and "stags"?

I think I will have to start a hog deer photo thread now so these pics can be displayed and archived there as well. Gryph, I have started a sambar deer one already. Hint, hint.

Goes to show. Hang out for the better one, and not shoot the first one sees. Sometimes go home empty handed.

On my two hog deer hunts I was willing to take a female, but set myself to wait until the Thursday am or pm before considering it, ie a Monday to Friday hunt ie a female for meat.

Both of my hunts had a female and male tag available.

Good photos.

Yes mate patience is a virtue alright,i have knocked back hoggy hunts (free) for the last four years,I am hoping to get back into it next year as well and perhaps hang out the whole time for a better one.

I did two days hunting the the opening day and took the little fella the next day, open day the 1st of April was around 8 hours sitting watching and waiting.

You did very well on your hunt, many many hunters get sfa.

As a side note the Blonde Bay winners all maxed out this year as the check station fella told us.
