The Sambar Thread!
      #158225 - 05/04/10 01:57 AM

A good Sambar stag, probably the greatest trophy to be taken in Australia and taken free range in the wild under free chase one of the world's great trophies.

Ladies and Gentlemen, post some of your sambar pics here please.

A game camera pic of a freshly rubbed out sambar stag, needs a few years yet to mature.Although most hunters wouldnt hesitate to drop the hammer on him.

although not a deer of course, this is a Koala from the same cam, diff spot.Posted for the OS readers.

It amazes me that a bloke go`s through the effort of loading pics for others and they dont actually notice that there were some reasonable sambar pics amongst the " rub trees are only ever photographed with rifles leaning against them."

Well try this

and this

And just to annoy you even more is that there is not only a rifle at this rub but a bloke too.

First class. I respect the skill shown in taking live pics of sambar as I have tried and failed. It is more difficult than shooting one IMO.

Thanks for demonstrating your skill.

Amazing to see the red and sambar together, how much overlap do the two species have in Vic NSW?

I`ve been doing a lot of arvo`s sitting on a wallow at a range of 140 yards or so and a few weeks ago saw a handy stag come out of the tea-tree and stand for five listening to the world, that was right on dark and too dark for a pic of any sort.

I had Rono come in with me one evening to have a crack at him but he didnt show at all and tonight was the next time since I first saw him.

Anway this evening after a couple of weeks of Jack I saw him or I reckon its him appear approx 6.05PM out of the tea-tree and stroll down the hill towards me stopping a couple of times and I had the Zeiss on him too,I had quickly wound it up to 10x and in the ordinary light it was tough to see him for what he was carrying on his head. I thought he might have been low 20`s or so,anyway I lost him in the cover then saw him come out at around approx 6.15 and cross a clearing and head straight to the wallow...Yeehaa! I just happen to have a cam on that wallow and thought " this is gonna be big!"

Well he stood for a minute and there was no flash..."faaaaark whats wrong with the faaaarking thing,it should have fired by now" This is after I discovered that my cam had been on the wallow for a week and I hadn't turned the see unt on so the thought of more bad luck happening was on the cards.

Then as he dropped into the wallow 'bang' the cam flashed...beauty GOT HIM! Then three more flashes illuminated him right up as I was watching through my Swaro`s,he actually looked a better stag haha and until I see the pics I wont know for sure whether I should have pulled on him when I first saw him. The last flash was when he stood away from the wallow and I reckon I only got his arse. The flash lit him alright and I did get a glimpse of what I thought was more length, though it was tough with the speed of the illumination and the chunks of mud looking like knobs on his top tines, anyway it was a good experience and made waiting in the rain all these times worth it I thought.

Hopefully I will get a decent pic or two to post.

Hind behind the tree, note rock,no wallow..this pic is from a year or maybe its two ago.

Same spot but a wallow has been opened..note the rock, other tree has fallen.

small stag pic from 6PM tonight, note same wallow just in bottom of the pic.I took a heap of pics but the movement and low light resulted in very poor pics.

I watched this bloke wallow and frig around but my trail cam flash didn't go off,I knew it was working though as I could see when the stag was in the wallow he would suddenly throw his head around and look to the cam obviously he was hearing it working etc....It was way too dark to get pics but I could see him through the bino`s easily.
Never saw the other stag, back into it tomorrow, might even sneak in and get my card.

Talk about me spewing, that stag that i watched in the wallow yesterday? My camera never fired a shot,he was snapping his head looking at times so while I was seeing that I knew it was working although the flash never triggered.. I am filthy!.

I`m not impressed with the pics either, that wallow is only five/six yards from the camera.

So this is one of the scenes I was privileged to witness as the first stag wallowed and interacted with the wombat.

It was light enough to view comfortably in the bino`s but better in the flash haha.

I actually saw the stag doing the face off with the wombat moments before and the cam caught the bat on the turn after an antler prompt.

I know this stag,I have a pic of him just rubbed out, glad I didn't bang him the other night. I thought he was bigger but something suggested "wait till you see him better" so I held off gladly.

Here is another stag fresh rubbed out from 6 months ago, although the camera angle changes the 'look' I believe its him.

I found my batteries were down, presumably thats why it didnt trigger while I was watching the second stag in the wallow.

Mog,bring the right ammo as you can see the muscular development of the stag "with wombat" and he`s only a baby yet.

I waited till dark last night in the hope of ID-ing the stag that was part of a group of five from the previous night, the five didnt turn up until it was too late to see antler size and shape so I got into my chosen spot and waited over a gully system and then this young stag came out and wallowed, unfortunately it was 7.45 pm and dark in the shadows of the wallow and I couldnt fluke him looking up at all for a better pic.
He stood and posed after wards at his preaching tree and he was gone for all money with my cross hairs on him.. a few more years yet...22 long x 25 wide.

10/22/10 Daryl was the last post of mine in this thread. As you see I haven't added any more to it for quite a few years.
So I will add a wild dog (bitch) taken quite a few years ago for a different something.
