Engravers ink covering barrel/rib solder

Has anyone ever heard of engravers ink being used to cover barrel/rib solder to make a double rifle look better?

Engravers ink is either black india ink applied by brush and rubbed in, or a black sharpie, they use natural rubbing alcohol to take off the top coat with very thin flour cloth.

With that said I don't see how that method will cover solder and look proper.

I agree with the 'will not look right' comment.

The solder line gives the gun character.
If the color really bugs you, there are solutions available from Birchwood Casey etc for properly blacking cupric metals such as brass/bronze/silver.
I think they call it 'Brass Black' (from birchwood casey)

I agree that it does not look right. A well known double rifle builder told me that "everyone does this" when I asked what that stuff was on my new double rifle. I have never seen this stuff on any double, either shotgun or rifle. I guess it is to cover up a sloppy soldering job quickly and cheaply. There was a bit of it on the side of the quarter rib as well. In fact, I've never seen this stuff in any photo of this maker's rifles.

I figured I was getting a weasel answer. Thanks for the help and confirmation.

Never heard of any reputable double rifle maker doing this. It is a cover for sloppy work.

Just one of the reasons you pay more for some gun IMHO.

The best way to cover the solder is to have a tight fit.

"Perchance,,, Was this CalRigby?" No, but the quote above
this one might give you a hint.

I haven't told you anything, but you fellows are
smart and know how to figure out mysteries.

Quite right.
