Best 9.3x62 Reloading Dies?
      #157785 - 29/03/10 08:18 PM

Who makes the best 9.3x62 reloading dies? I have heard that RCBS makes their 9.3x62 full length sizing die with the same base diameter as their .30-06 die, and therefore overwork the brass at this critical point. I would rather have a set of dies with RCBS quality but with proper dimensions to size the brass for reliable chambering and no more. So who’s 9.3x62 dies should I look for?

I have RCBS dies for my 9.3x62 but I dont full length resize unless I have to.
I just use a neck Die until they are tight to chamber. I do think the RCBS full length die in 9.3 does over work the brass a little.
I believe that Redding make the best dies.
Cheers Neale.

I use Redding 9.3x62 dies but would have been quite happy with RCBS.

I have an RCBS two die set and then bought a Redding neck die. I use Lapua Brass exclusively now but have also used RWS and Norma brass. I had no problems finding a sub MOA load in 286 and 320 Woodleigh projectile weights.

I haven't used the F/L die much prefering to only neck size virgin and once fired brass.

For a short range thumper hunting round like the 9.3x62, I don't see the need to take as much care with case prep as I would with a varmint calibre. My rifle is an ex. 30-06 and has no problems feeding the neck sized euro cases.

I use Redding dies for 9,3x62 and would buy the same again if I were in the market.

G'Day Fella's,

Brazos Jack, I'm quite a bit biased toward either Redding or RCBS!
I have about 17 die sets and apart from sets that came with particular firearms, all the others are either RCBS or Redding.
If I'm getting a new die set, they will be Redding and I only use Redding shell holders, as they have a knurled outer which I like.

Hope this helps.

Jack,

I have RCBS dies in 9.3x62. They have proper dimensions in every respect. The base diameter is proper to this cartridge and not set the same as the .30-06. When using brass formed from .30-06 the dies do not reduce the case back to .30-06 base dimensions. The dies are excellent quality. Have no fear of them.

I have Redding 9.3 dies and like them better than RCBS, Hornady, Lyman, Lee, etc.

I have an RCBS press and dies in .375 flanged H&H, .500 NE and .30-06 all RCBS dies...I hope the Redding dies I have just bought in 6.5 X54 MS will fit ??? p.s. Curl, I am enroled on a reloading course in the UK on 6th June with the BASC as per Jabali or Brambles recommendation (sorry Guys can't remember which of you it was) so I can start reloading in the Mannlicher or the Dodd Hughes Hagn, whichever turns up first, though possibly it might be better to start with the .44 Mag in the Marlin, what powder in the .44 for 240-270 grain bullets ? best, Mike

I started reloading metallic cartridges in Junior Hi in the late 60’s with a Lee loading kit and an oak hammer handle. When I graduated from college, one of my early purchases was an RCBS Rock Chucker press. Most of my dies have always been RCBS. I did have a Redding .308 Winchester neck sizing die when I shot high power in the late 70’s and early 80’s. So I like RCBS.

But I have heard the charge of too tight a base diameter several times.

If Redding are as good as RCBS in general, as several posters say, and in this particular case are more properly dimensioned, then I think I will try Redding in this case.

Redding are heads and shoulders over RCBS in die quality, however Redding is not a good company to deal with, normally, if something goes wrong. Friends of mine have had difficulty with Redding on that account.

I prefer Hornady, Lee or Lyman dies over RCBS - ANY day.

I am not aware of problems with base diameters on other than RCBS dies, but if that's the case, I'd simply remedy that myself, on the lathe or with a slit hickory shaft and emery using an electric drill.

Maybe not the best but I'm happy with my RCBS dies. And mine are in larger than 30-06 base diameter.

Mike,

Good deal! I wish you were here, as I would take you under my wing and we would have fun.

For the .44 Mag. you can't beat the classic powder that Elmer Keith used - Hercules (now Alliant) 2400. The next choice is WW296. In the Marlin carbine you might like IMR4227. Any of these will work.

Keep us informed.

Curl - have you tried any Lil'Gun in the .44 yet? It works exceptionally well in mine. I find data for H110 and W296 is usally identical to pressure and speed for most ctg. that list it, however neigther should be downloaded from near max to max.

I started with the Simplex dies included with my Sako AV 9.3x62 and had nothing but trouble.

Crushed several necks when trying to seat bullets, then had three partial head separations on supposedly once-fired Norma brass also supplied by the original owner. I suspect the cases were being excessively overworked by out-of-spec dies, even when set at nominal position.

Changed over to Redding dies, junked the old brass for new Norma and never had a single problem since.

I'd recommend Redding dies.

Daryl,

No I haven't tried Lil'Gun. Maybe I'll look at it.

My latest use of .44's is in a S&W M29. I used to have a Marlin and enjoyed it a lot. It's long gone, though. I used IMR4227 back then, but also some 2400. There's not a lot of difference in those two.

In the M29 I'm shooting cast lead ahead of moderate charges of Unique. I don't need the excitement and discomfort that goes with shooting full .44 Mag. loads in a handgun.

Curl,

If you're after light loads in the .44 you might give Trail Boss a try. I've used it in .45 LC and .475 Linebaugh loads. It's high volume and low density so it fills the case nicely. It also seems to burn pretty clean.

Yeah, I have a can of Trail Boss, but haven't even opened it. Unique is an age old favorite, and old habits die hard.

I'm backing off to some AL7 and AL5 I have, as well as the Herco and Trail Boss. Trail Boss is a hoot to shoot.
