Banteng & Scrub Bulls Thread
      #157444 - 25/03/10 07:24 PM

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Post your photos of your Banteng and Scrub Bull photos.

Banteng one of the rarer sort after bovine trophies only available in the wild free range in the Top End of the Northern Territory, in the Cobourg Peninsula and a select other less known sites.

Scrub bulls, wild bulls, never mustered roaming in cattle country. One of the bovines most likely to actually charge.

Have fun.

My Banteng Bull, a magnificent beast I was lucky to take in late November 2007. Nicknamed by me, the "Thunder Bull" as we were hunting right before the Wet started. Thunder in the air much of the day, occasional showers, and high humidity.

But what a trophy! Never thought I would get onto one like this.

An old scrub bull taken in cattle country on the edge of the aboriginal lands in Arnhemland. Taken in 2005 while hunting the "mad cow" buffalo cull, plus a few boar.

An old bull, thin and bony, but a great set of horns.

It is something I will have to do one day.
You can almost see "the steam coming off you" in the Thunder Bull pic. It looks hot !!.
Cheers Neale.

Were these bulls introduced with the settlers? I am curious, is there a designated season to hunt them and do you have to purchase a special license or permit? Christopher

Sorry Chris,

Are you talking about the scrub bulls or the banteng.

The scrub bulls are generally cattle that escape the yearly muster and could be a few years in the wild or indeed mixed blood from the line the cattle rancher wants and doesn't want...

The banteng were brought over years ago (early 1900's I think) and run wild on the Coburg Peninsular of Arhnem Land.

There is no season apart from it's difficult to hunt the Coburg from December to May. Banteng need to be hunted with a licenced outfitter and they are few and far between.

Cheers,
Mark.

Banteng were intro'd AFAIK on the foundation of the Balanda (English inserted: white) settlement near Cape Don abt 1860.

The true name for the area in Iwaitja (local Tradional Owners lingo) is Garig Gunak Barlu. The term "Cobourg" is a colonial (swearing deleted) term. EOS.

The last para in the above post is circumstantial and relates only to those animals within the park boundaries.

Magnificent set of horns John, that is a beauty.

One reason I don't like Scrubbers is when they charge, the horns are facing at you !!! The other reason is of course that they are prone to charging without provication LOL !!!!!

Some of this is repeated from what earlier posters have written.

The Northern Territory was first attempted to be settled by the British on the Cobourg Peninsula at the "Victoria" Settlement in 1838. This settlement was abandoned in 1849.

The British named the peninsula, Cobourg. In more recent years the Aboriginal name was recognised with the park which occupies a lot of the peninsula being named, Gurig Banuk Barlu. I use the word Cobourg because I do not remember the local traditional owner name well. And visitors probably remember Cobourg more easily.

When the settlement was abandoned stock brought over from Indonesia and elsewhere such as the Timor and Javan Water Buffalo and Banteng and wild pigs were released. Other game originated from this time? Maybe Sambar I don't know.

The only game in the Northern Territory with a declared season and bag limits are waterfowl, ducks and geese.

However the Top End, the Northern part of the Northern Territory is in the tropics, and so has a dry season and a Wet (rainy monsoon season). Generally the Wet is from late November or December to April to May. Give or take. It is also quite a bit hotter from October to November and humidity increasing in November without the rains to ease the humidity.

So it becomes more difficult to hunt or travel during the Wet. Unless one is in situ like the local residents! Some areas are probably accessible, but most outfitters start in June or July and finish August to October. May and June is greener, more water around. July and August are choice months.

Back to the animals.

Many of the very large Northern and Central cattle stations (ranches) in the Northern Territory, Far North Queensland, Northern Western Australia and Central Australia have areas which are not really managed or worked at all. I know of one property where really only ten percent of the property is actively managed. So there can be cattle that have never been mustered or handled. Bulls as one knows can be aggressive and property owners or managers often do not mind the feral scrub bulls being shot.

Alan Moon - "4seventy" - has mentioned he has found scrub bulls charge more than other bovines in his experience. They do seem quite aggressive.

Aussies hunt them with everything from deer calibres to big bores. For a visiting client probably a 9.3 or .375 and up is recommended. If charged dropping the animal well is a good idea.

Scrub bulls also exist in other parts of Australia. For example Kangaroo Island is or was said to have wild cattle in the Western parts of the island. Plus wild pigs for other two hundred years. However I personally could not vouch for these wild cattle reports but have seen it claimed in stories.

Banteng are very rare internationally but the Top End's herds are the largest most viable wild herds. Hunting of them free range is not possible anywhere else legally. They are "tolerated" by National Parks, but not necessarily liked and could face a sudden order to be exterminated one day. Merely because they are introduced.

The two principal places banteng are hunted by clients are Cobourg and behind wire at Mary River. As was said in another post, they are reported to exist outside the Gurig Banuk Barlu Park as well on other Aboriginal lands in Arnhemland. I do not believe these are offered for 'safari' hunting, but more if permission is given by the traditional owners in those areas.

There are two outfitters whom have rights to operate on the peninsula. However several other outfitters work with these outfitters providing hunts. For example, a sponsor of NitroExpress.com, "Hunt Australia" sells a good number of hunts and works well for their clients.

Bookings can be made with such outfitters according to how many animals have been made available for hunting.

Hope all that helps!

Not Cape Don.. Victoria Settlement, as it was known by the filthy Ballanders is around in Port Essington. 1830's rather than 1860's.

The part about hunting banteng outside the park is actually now true, as this is part of a safari concession, for recreational hunters. Local people can still hunt them at their discretion of course, anywhere they like, including the park. Not sure if the concession precludes the 'locals' from taking invited guests... I havent read it - but that doesnt matter for regular rec hunters.

There may still be some banteng country not covered by the concession on the eastern side below the peninsula?? on the Maningrida side that is..

There are definitely Sambar on the Pensinsula of many varied names.

They're (generally) smaller and a lighter colour than their southern bretheren and stags have a more consistent but lighter rack. Not much is known about their potential and as far as I know nobody promoted hunting them - though I've never researched it. There's been a few individuals shoot the odd one over the years and report that they're just as capable and worthy as their cousins in VIC/NSW.

It is my understanding that one can be invited to join in on Banteng hunts outside the areas used by guides, but it helps to be a cousin of the residents - as at least one member here knows well.
