Top and bottom rib suppliers
      #157195 - 23/03/10 03:21 PM

I am in need of both top and bottom ribs for the rifle I am working on but unable to find anybody that has them. I contacted Tom Ondrus a couple of weeks ago but apparently he has been in the hospital for the last two weeks and not been able to return emails or calls and not sure what has happened with him, I hope all's ok.
I have found a source for a bottom rib but am in need of a top rib with a quarter rib for sights. I suppose I can make them if I have to but would rather purchase them.

Have you looked at the suppliers listed in the sticky in this section?

Rolland,
I have used the ribs which Tom Ondrus/Crown Press supplies on three builds in the past. I've been VERY happy with both the quality of the product and Tom's service. You might want to wait a bit until he's back on his feet. I was never able to find anyone on this side of the Atlantic, other than Tom, who supplies them
Best,
Ron.

Rolland,
As far as I know, Tom Ondrus is the only one in the U.S. who has any one piece topribs. He told me some time ago that he had run out of them, then he managed to find another supplier with a few to sell. The last time I ordered from him the price he charged me was $100.00 each. That may seem a little high but if you consider all the work it takes to machine one from scratch, it is more than fair. I have one new, unused one left for one more rifle but before I use it, I'm going to check with a local machinist to see what he would charge me for some of them made right here. If I get a supply set up, I'll let you all know about it. I'm sure the guy would rather take on the job if I could tell him I had orders up front for so many of them. Bob H.

I was told by a friend to look up Butch Searcy. He apparently has them.

I talked to a gent back in Tom's area that knows him. It sounds like he's in serious shape. I hope he pulls thru.

If you cant get any, take a pipe in a good dimension and cut strips out of it.

Rolland,
Tom Ondrus posted a new thread on the AR double rifle site today. I would assume that means he's out of hospital and back home. Give him a call in the morning.
Best,
Ron.

Make your own, thats what I found works the best. I use mild steel from Brownells, in 3/8", 1/2", and 3/4". Also you can get 3/8" square stock for making the top quarter rib, you'll need to mill to fit, or use a hand grinder then file to final fit. I tried Toms ribs, and just couldn't get them to fit the way I wanted. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with them, they just weren't my cup of tea. Also, plain steel is cheap and blue's easily.

For what its worth, I purchased a couple of ribs from Ellis Brown they look like they will work ok. They are plain smooth steel.
He has a listing on the book web site to his custom shop.
