Browning B78 single shot

I picked up one of these rifles recently and was amazed at how nice they are and how accurate they are.It has a 24 inch octagonal barrel with sights, best of all , it's a 45-70.

I picked up some 420 cast bullets for the 45-70, I loaded them up with 42 grains of IMR 4198. I got a 7/8ths group at 100 yds. The weight of the Browning sure tames the recoil. I put a 1.5-4x scope on it and it seems to be holding together for now anyways!! I wanted to see how the big cast bullets look after firing them into some big rounds of fir, I never did recover as they sailed through.
It's time to round up a few 500 grain cast bullets and see how they do.

I found an old Lyman cast bullet reloading book and used one of the recipes for the 420 grainer with a gas check. The book max was 47 grains of IMR 4198 for a velocity of 1932 fps, I used 45 grains and got 1935 fps. The 420's shot into an inch at 100 yds,they kick a bit more than the 40 grain load....not surprised there.
