Brno ZKK 601 in .308
      #156993 - 20/03/10 09:41 PM

Hi All,

I see quite a few posts about the ZKK 601's in the forums here so I thought I would share mine. Back in 97 when they finally paid out the compenstion for takign our pistols away on Christmas eve I was in the local gunshop moanign that I could not fins a Std Brno 601 in .308 Win. I ahd been lookign and phonign about and of course it was all the new all singing & dancing 550 they had in stock. My local shop normally had a couple of the racks but there were none to see.

Well on hearing this John behind the counter says:-

"Why didn't you say I have several upstairs still in their boxes"

Now I have no idea why I didn't ask when I didn't see any out ....................... but I didn't anyway off he goes upstairs and comes back with a box and opens it in front of me and as the rifle clears the box I just said .......... " MINE" the stock has tiger striping all down it.

Anyway I brought some rings for it, Hilvers, and a new 6x42 scope but before shooting it I took out the sett trigger and fitted the standard curved blade. A little while later I did a little customising first was to make a barrel band for the front sling loop as the standard one was right where may hand wanted to be. I made it out of a scrap SA80 gas block and after annealing it carefull peened it around the barrel to I didn't need to remove the foresight.

As I don't like the plasticy finishes used by the factories so I stripped it off and carefully re-shaped around the loading/ejection port which is visable in that last photo. Then at a Bisley Arms fair I picked up the Zeiss Jena ZF4/N scope and it's mount for teh ZKK 601:-

Oh and it shoots quite well too:-

Although that was only shot at 75M (82 yards) as that is the distance of our club range here. I moved from down south some 5 years ago now as before I shot a lot on the Bisley ranges but now they are too far to make a day of it.

G'Day Fella's,

Nice Brno Brit!
I have a real soft spot for all Brno/CZ Rimfire and older Brno ZKK series Centerfire Rifles!

I personally believe they have been looked over and under rated by most (supposedly) "In The Know" people for whatever reason.

Whilst the current 550 Series are probably some or the best finished rifles (especially the stocks) that have come out of that factory, I'm afraid that "Elephant Trunk" sized Bolt Shroud puts me off them!

I have a very nice 1970 manufactured ZKK 600 that has stock wood almost identical in color and figure through the action area of your rifle but from the forend to the butt pad!

The ZKK series (and I suppose the 550 Series also), are a very under rated (in many areas) Mauser Type, controlled feed action!

Thank you, I also have a nice 65 vintage Brno Model 2 .22 L/R as well which funnily enough came for the same shop.

I like the old BRNO's - have had a 600 and 602, but never the short action. Now that I see your's, its on my list of to-haves.
Good job.

That's a great looking Brno. Did you refinish the stock or is that the factory finish? Looks like a hand rubbed oil finish to me. Very nice looking piece!

Your correct I stripped off the varnish and used a Purdeys stock finish kit from Wharthog, sadly no longer available, I also beveled the stock by the loading/ejection port before applying the oiled finish. The grain was enhanced with Alkanet Root oil which came in the kit.

And thank you for the kind comment.

You are right about these rifles being under rated.Personally i believ these are fine rifles, strong and accurate.I have a 452 in .22 and i would never let it go.Czech pistols like the CZ75 and 999 Zastava are also fine autos.-

Here is my ZKK 601 in .308. Bought it well used years ago. It is the older type from 1977 with the cute fold-down peepsight in the receiver bridge. It came with the ugly "de luxe" stock with square foreend, white-line spacers and a perished ventilated recoil pad. Shortened the barrel to 20", reshaped the stock, put a steel gripcap, horn foreend tip, ring swivel base and oil finish on.

Were the ZKK600 with the pop up apeture available in 9.3x62?

If so, anybody know if these were available in Australia? I have only seen .270, 7x64 and .30/06.

George

George

Yes, I have an original Brno ZKK brochure c1967 which shows all three models with integral rear pop-up peep sights, and forward banded sling swivel.

Original factory calibres were listed as follows:
ZKK600
.30-06
.270 Win
7x57mm
7x64mm
8x57S
8x64S
9,3x62mm
10,75x68S

ZKK601
.222 Rem
.222 Rem Mag
.243 Win
.308 Win

ZKK602
.358 Norma Mag
.375 H&H Mag
.458 Mag

As you say, ZKK600's were officially imported to Australia in .270Win, 7x57mm and .30-06... though I believe other calibres were available on special order. I've seen one in 7x64mm for example.

You're a couple years too late for 4 brand new 1990's 7x57's in a local store here in P.G. I posted there were 3 left and one of the "Lower Mainland" BC members here, bought them all.

They are like Hen's teeth now, but perhaps in some out of the mainstream store, there is still the odd one around.

I traded mine for a .22 Hornet, after dropping a deer with the 7x57 - lost interest in small bore big game rifles. ?

Some real nice calibers there. I'd love to come across a 9.3x62 or a 358NM.

After toying with the idea of buying a new rifle, I quickly came to the conclusion that its hard to better the BRNO ZKK's, especially for the money.

So the search begins.

George

G'Day Fella's,

GK, just in case you aren't aware of it and for a bit of an insite into older Brno firearms history.
The Soviet Union (USSR) invaded the Czech Republic in 1968. The purist's insist that this is when quality of Brno firearms dropped off, as a result of Soviet influence.
I have looked at a few post 68 manufactured Brno firearms and I believe that they were still making very good firearms for two of three years, after this date.

So how do you know when a Brno rifle was made?
If you look at the Left Hand Side at the junction between the barrel and the receiver, you will see some similar proof marks and also a two digit number on both the barrel and the action. This number is the year of manufacture!
In the case of my Brno Model 1 it is "51" for 1951, my ZKK600 is "70" for 1970 and my CZ 452 is "03" for 2003.

Hope this helps with your search!

What year did they stop making them with the pop up peep sight.
I think I read somewhere that it was 1979.
