New Rifle

Just bought this rifle chambered for .375 H&H Flanged. You know the story.....I "needed" it!

Wonder if anyone here has seen this one before or knows who made it? I'd sure be interested in speaking with the maker. Thanks.

Looks like a 1897 patent WR but the lever has been changed. US restock dates from 1980s?

The wood can be reshaped, a new pattern on the checkering and i would love it if left handed.

Guess I didn't see the problem and, frankly, still can't. Are we talking aesthetics or function here?

I didnt see the problem either, only a respond to the remarks above.

I would love that rifle, but if i would make it to my taste i would reshape the stocks cheekpiece and give it a more classic sheckering together with a silvers butpad.

But in the rate i fix things i would probably hunt with it for 20 years without anny problem what so ever.

No problem with aesthetics or function. You got yourself a beautiful rifle. Ignore the one anal retentive on this thread who has difficulties with your rifle and enjoy her.

Be sure to post hunting pics and I hope you get some magnificent trophies.

Does the rifle have any marks on the action at all? Me thinks the action could be one of the kits offered by Len Bull of "Action Castings" in Trinidad Colorado. That reminds me of the one I have sitting in a box, 80% done. I should get to that some day......

Me thinks you are on to something. Clayton Nelson built up a few of these rifles in the late 80's/early 90's in various actions and calibers.I know because I have one that is a gibbs copy of a minuature farquharson in .280 currently being rechambered to 7x65 due to ejection/timing problems. Long story. SKB has good advice- check for markings on the action. If all else fails, call Clayton Nelson in Trinidad, CO. He may be able to enlighten you or discount this theroy.

Clayton is an amazingly talented man. I have held one of his mini Gibbs style actions and they are a pleasure to behold. The thing that is truly awesome about him is that it is just him and his partners, Mr. Bridgeport and Mr. Nicholson. Just incredible what that guy can do with a mill and a file. Any pictures of your mini Gibbs?

I will post pics as soon as I get it back from Clayton. Like I said; timing and ejection problems, long story but with a happy ending. He has agreed to do the repairs gratis as there was a glitch in the design. This mind you on a 20 year old gun that I am not the original purchaser of. My hats off to him, A #1 stand up guy in my opinion.

Thank you for the suggestion. I called Clayton this afternoon and had a great conversation. Turns out that we are friends of friends......several times. He is more than willing to help with my research on my new shootin' iron. I sent him photos and am anxiously awaiting our next visit.

^ OK,

1.Dispense with the "monte carlo" and reshape the butt to a WR profile with "shadow line" cheekpiece.
2. Slim the fore-end a touch and incorporate panels to that and butt as per the 1905? catalogue. 3. Eliminate the abrupt transition from an octagon to round on the barrel.
4. Reshape the barrel band (but as this appears integral and too small to enable a reshape) then use a more traditional profile either sweated or soldered.
5.Reshape the arse end of the rear sight base.
6. Reprofile the foresight base to refelct the original makers intent.
7.Dunno if abt the lever can be reshaped but it needs SERIOUS work to reshape or replace; otherwise in current form it's a very poor bit of work and entirely outside the WR profile.

FWIW I have 3 originals.

Noice,

Bloody superb in fact!

Mine are 35350, 35352 and 35673 (all second quality with trigger guard safeties)

I see the cover but it isn't listed in the survivors index. A 400/360?

Maybe Wally had a "bad hair day"?

A nice piece that in my mind needs no cosmetic changes.

Mr. Nelson thinks the rifle may have been built by a Trinidad trained gunsmith named William Sturdivant on a Leonard Bull Farquharson kit. Does anyone know Mr. Sturdivant and how to get in touch with him?

Looks like I did pretty well on this one. I was doing a little research on who might have made this rifle and I was given the name....Bill Sturtevant. Today I spoke to Bill's son at Sturtevant Arms in Pueblo, Colorado and he confirmed that the rifle was, in fact, built there. It is a Sturtevant Courage and the action, barrel and stock......the whole firearm.....is custom made from raw materials entirely in their shop. He remembered the rifle and was able to provide me with it's entire provenance. This one had most of the bells and whistle options too. He said the rifle would be around 5-6 times what I paid if I bought it today! I also found out that it has an incredible warranty. Check out this LINK
