Thinking about having a 400 H & H or 465 H & H rifle built, has anyone heard anything about these. Like preformance and reloading data

On NE way back in December 2002.

Holland & Holland has released two new big bore cartridges, the 400 H&H Magnum and the 465 H&H Magnum.

From their reports Holland & Holland has experienced increasing numbers of enquiries for big bore rifles especially for hunting big and dangerous game in Africa. As a result they have introduced the two new cartridges.

Building on their experience with the peerless all round African hunting cartridge the .375 H&H Magnum they sought to create two new cartridges with more power and provide more leeway for the very largest game. The new cartridges designed for bolt action rifles do not offer light bullets and high velocity instead concentrating on the formula of heavy bullets and bullet diameter to do the job.

While the .375 H&H propels a 300 gr bullet at a muzzle velocity of 2,500 ft/sec for a muzzle energy of 4,100 ft lbs, the new .400 H&H pushes a 400 gr bullet at 2,350 ft/sec and the .465 H&H pushing a 480 gr at approx the same velocity, the new cartridges aiming for a minimum of 5,000 ft lbs.

Thats all the info I have now, but will post more when more details are available.

It will be interesting to see if these two new cartridges are rimless or belted and what the actual calibres turn out to be.

If you come across anything, go ahead and post.

For more info see the Holland & Holland web site

I have an article by Simon Everett that documents two new Holland and Holland cartridges. First is the .400 H & H magnum which is a .416 diameter bullet from the .375 H & H case at about 2,375'/sec (another .416 Rem Mag so to speak) It's factory loaded with Woodleigh 400 grain bullets.

The second new round is the .465 H & H magnum is not yet released because load developement is still in the works. The author doesn't say so but it seems the .465 H & H is another .470 capstick or .458 Lott with a .465 bullet.

Ft-Lb energy seem to run about 4160 for the .375, 5,000 for the .400 and 6,000 with the .465.

There was a nice article by Pierre van der Walt in the October 2008 issue of Rowland Ward's Field Sportsman.

There will be so few rifles chambered for those cartridges that the are effectively wildcats. That does not mean that they are bad calibers, but they fill a niche already filled by several other more established cartridges.

Wrong, bullet diameter for the 400 H&H is .411.

Still think a .400 H&H would make a cool Mauser to own and use.

I looked at one of the .400H&H cartridges last year in London. It has a fairly long neck and nice taper. It should load like it's made of butter. To my knowledge the .400H&H is the closest thing there is to a 450/400 for bolt guns.

The .404 has a .423 bore. The 450/400NE and 400H&H are .410/.411 bore. Maybe you were thinking of 400 Jeffrey, another name for the 450/400NE.

OK, I see you were looking at the bore size.

The 404 Jeff has always been known or seen as the Bolt Action equivalent of the 450/400.

The 404 Jeffery was built as the bolt action equivalent of the .450/400x3” and bought out in the modified standard length M98 action in 1905.
The reason for the increase in bullet diameter from that used in the .450/400x3” was, in conjunction with shortening the case from 3” (75mm to 73mm), to keep the pressure at a safe level for use in the lengthened standard action.

The 400 H&H case length is just over 72mm with a long neck so it is the modern bolt action equivalent if you like, of both the .404 Jeffery and the .450/400x3”.

Ironically there is possibly a greater range of .423” calibre bullets available now than for the .411” calibre due to the growing popularity of the old .404J workhorse.
