Ann's lovely picture of her most recent black bear. From Northern Quebec. It was a 245 pound boar.

Haven't had the opportunity to hunt browns or grizzlies yet, but this Gila Wilderness black bear made B&C book (taken with an original Winchester 1895 in .35 WCF):

These were taken from the low bridge over the Babine River, while on a fishing trip - same trip as the previous pictures, John posted.

Two black bears I killed in Northern British Colombia in May, 2005.

The first is jet black:

The second is a cinnamon phase black bear:

Both were taken with my J. Winkler double rifle, one shot kills. The taxidermist at Smithers said both bears were 18 to 21 years old, judging from their worn and broken teeth.

Not a big bear, by any means, but taken on the lat day of a 5 day hunt in Idaho, in very hot, dry conditions, spot and stalk.

Good rifle for that job, Maddog. I like that 22" bl.'d 95.Hard to tell with the angle - maybe it's a ported 18 1/2"? (but I'd rather have Curl's rifle in either case) .

Daryl S, yes it's a .45-70 Guide Gun. L was using the then new 325 gr. hornady leverevolution bullets. Rounded a bend on a creek at the bottom of a canyon, and found her eating berries. Shot her at a whopping 45 ft.!

POWELL, Wyo. (AP) -- A Wyoming wildlife manager says he supports hunting grizzly bears now that the population in the Yellowstone National Park area has reached the highest level in decades.

Mike, Non-residents and aliens are certainly allowed to hunt bears here in Alaska. In fact over the past four or five years probably 30% of our clients have come from outside the USA.
Like African elephants, our great bears are one of the world's greatest trophies.

No doubt the grandeur of Grizzly no way less than Siberian Tigers, Bengal Tigers and African Lions but in some respect it is marking its acme. Certain attributes turns the beast into an element of mass destruction:

1. Least choosiness about the prey.

2. Great smelling power and good eyesight (Least found both in most of the prior mentioned beasts).

3. Hefty built up.

4. Great knack of chasing the prey till the last edge.

5. Ferocious killer. (Sometimes starts eating prey alive)

That bear is what I consider an honest 9 1/2 foot bear and it was the smallest of the six we killed this season. the skull was 26"

WE left a few for nexr year though

Here are a couple of mine. Both from Russia. The small one on the wall is a long story and certainly a mistake caused mainly by the language barrier between me and the Russian guides. I don't recommend Russia unless you have some experience with judging bears yourself. The larger one I did much better on. The Russia hunt has quite a bit more "Culture and Adventure" than Alaska, including seeing Moscow on the way over and back, but I think overall the Alaska bears are larger! It's also much less of a hassle to get into hunting camp in Alaska.

I hope to do at least 1 more Brownie but Alaska will be the destination this time.

Really good friend of mine just got back from the AK pennisula...said he and his guide were constantly stalked by a brownie for 4 days--he was causing them grief so they ended up shooting the bear....he was not happy with both the hunt or the size of the bear...but stated someone had a hunter up there from South Dakota..who ended up shooting one over 10 ft---nice bear...

I REALLY want to go back up there for another big brownie.. that and moose -...

thank you

Those are great pics, HogPilot.

Below are some shots of a young lady who has now joined our black powder section of the R&Gun club. She's an excellent shot with rifle, shotgun (modern and BP) or with her compound bow, as shown below. Nice little brown phase blackie. Perfect practise makes perfect, A.
