Grapes!
      #156494 - 15/03/10 02:48 AM

OK, in the food thread because the idea is to eat or make drink from these things. I am going to plant some grape vines this year. These are going to be small, one year old vines. I have never grown cultivated grapes. How many years until they will produce fruit? I plan on putting in two seedless varieties, a red and a seedless concord suitable for my cold climate.

Ann,

Possibly different between here with a Mediterranean climate and your climate. Gryph's link will be useful.

Eating grape varieties and wine grape varieties are often different.

Usually four years before the vine produces a full size crop. Some grapes will grow in the earlier years. Maybe seven plus years to get a 'mature' crop.

If wine making, red wine is easier than whites. White wine making needs a lot more cooling and temperature control. As for quantities, a tonne of grapes will make between 450 and 720 litres of wine. A good sized bucket holds about 9 kg to 10 kg of grapes as a guide, so a big full bucket of grape bunches will make about a half litre of wine. Depending a lot of variety and a lot of other factors, you might get several buckets of grapes per vine.

A few years back my wife bought some Valiant grapes for here in the yard. They were about three years old and started producing the next spring (planted in the fall). Up on a friends place this past fall we put in King of the North and Valiants, one year old, little guys. Kind of an experimental project to just get a little more diversity and production off the place. But those are two varietys that I know of and are rated for northern regions.

I ordered some one year old vines, not cheap, they are $15 a piece. One is King of the North, I forgot what the other one is.

Invite me up at harvest time. I'll help out as long as I get an invite back for taste testing.

I wonder if they have been grafted on to native-American vine rootstocks to make them resistant to phyloxera? Has anyone ever tasted the grapes from the American native varieties? I've heard the wine they make is foxy - maybe it smells like rocket

Good luck, Ann

I am a little far south in Florida, but I am going to plant some muscadine vines as an experiment. They are pretty hardy in the south and they make a great wine.
