338 RUM long shooting
      #15107 - 23/05/04 09:25 AM

I have a 338 RUM and have loaded for it a 250gr bullet at 3016 fps. What I don't know is how far this 250gr bullet will travel before it starts to drop with the velocity slowed down. I'm thinking 225yds maybe 250yds. The rifle is sighted in at 200yds with this load. I know at 300yds it drops 6.8". Maybe it goes 275yds before it starts to drop. I have shot my 416 with a 400gr bullet and it goes 150yds without droping then it drops 6" at 200yds.

You just need to look in the back of your reloading manual.

I would also recommend shooting as much as possible at longer ranges to find out just what your loads are doing.

A bullet starts to drop the moment it leaves the barrel. Your 338 RUM was designed for long range shooting. I think you should consult the trajectory charts for it and look at the mid-range trajectories.

I would sight it in for 250 to 300 yards for hunting in my area...long shots are the rule out here.

That 250 gr bullet will sure deliver the mail, if the sender does his job right.

Best way to do it is to put one target every 25 yards from 25 to 300 and shoot 2 shots if they group erll otherways more per target and you will be able to make your own chart.

Start to decide at which distance you like it zeroed and do that.

I have done this with my 300 win mag and plan to do it with my 375 and my 470 (only 100 meters then) and it is very interesting to analyze all the information.

I had that calibre before and it was lovely to shot at 300 meters. Swedish gun laws dont let you have that many guns as you want so I had to trade it.

I have been shooting and hunting for 43 years and I know the bullet drops as soon as it leaves the barrel but the velocity when it leaves the barrel is moving the bullet so fast that the bullet doesn't drop much till it reaches a slower velocity then it drops alot and thats what I'm trying to find out. Is it past 250yds when it drops alot.
I don't have a place to shoot thats over 200 yds long. So I thought maybe some one might have some info that could help.

Well I found the answer. Remington had a velocity chart for their 250 gr bullet going 2860 fps and it only drops .3" at 250 yds so I figure my 250 gr bullet witch is a Nosler partition should only drop about .1" at 250 yds zeroed at 200 yds. Their bullet drops 7.6" at 300 yds. Mine drops 6.8" at 300 yds.

Sierra Infinity 5 Suite gives following for the Nosler 338-250gr. Partition Gold, moly free bullet @ 3016 fps. sighted for 200 yds.
225yds= -1.12, 250yds= -2.58, 275yds= -4.37, 300yds= -6.51, 325yds= -9.02, 350yds= -11.92, 375yds= -15.2, 400yds= -18.89.
Hope this will help, nothing works like actually shooting at the longer ranges.
