I have been offered a 1930's Merkel DR in 8x57r. A beautiful gun except a soon to be divorced wife
Ran a drill down the barrel at the muzzle for several inches. Many years ago. Does anyone have
any experience in a possible. Relining and would it all need to be re-regulated.Any advice appreciated. Whitey

Lancaster thanks but it just looks so bad as it looks like the drill as wobbled around and it now looks like a funnel.? One barrel much worse than the other. And if you cut the barrels off. The gun would look odd. I think I can buy it for the price of a shotgun project and just cut them off as start over.

How long are the barrels? If long enough, they could be trimmed back to eliminate the drill rage.

Sad to hear, but the owner is probably glad it was the gun that got that treatment.

Cut them back or line them and it should be fine.

As the gun is about 500 miles from me and I have not seen it in some time.?
Of my memory is right. Shorting the barrels would have made the gun look. Goofy
And if you relined. I am thinking you would have to re-regulate ?? Which would mean tearing it all apart again.??? And at that point I would have a DR project.? But as it is all engraved etc. I was hoping there was a easy way to retain everything.

Whatever you do with it you will have to regulate it, lining it would save a lot of work.

I meen the procedure when the barrels are drilled out and a new barrel are inserted into the old ones. You will have to take the ribs off when soldering the liners and reatatch them afterwards, regulate and reblue.

Its a long way from building a new set, even using the old lump to sleeve a new set of barrels into.

Sleeving in uk means lining in the us, or is it the other way

As I got involved wanting to build a DR from a shotgun anyway. And for 400.00 I can
throw the old barrels away and start over and change the cal etc to something more modern.
and use it as a learning project.

I'd get it and check to see if it can be bored out to a larger caliber at Delta. That's the old LaBounty shop with alot on new $pndy machinery.

Thanks Mike. But if anything I would be interested more in a lighter or
smaller Dia cal.As I don't hunt anymore. And fooling with guns is just to
have fun and maybe shoot a paper target.

An 8mm would be a great paper puncher and it doesn't 'kick' much.

Personally I'd stay with the 8mm even with a rebarrel. That round is great for anything stateside and almost everything anywhere else. Keep it origional and play with the shotties for a different conversion.

You've got a lot on your plate now with the shotties from what I see.

ago.I threw away all the alarm clocks and calendars. And all these different projects
keeps my mind and hands busy.Smile

Definately worth getting for sure.
Relining might depend on whether there is enough thickness in the barrel walls at the muzzle.
Some doubles are pretty thin to start with, some being under .080".
It will make a great project gun regardless.

Whitey,

I guess the answer is that you are into "do it yourself projects", but my question is whether you have contacted Merkel to ask the price of new barrels? You might be favorably surprised, and the result will be much better than a tinkerer's project.

Curl yes I am into do it yourself projects. Smile As that is what I enjoy doing
And my friend did check on new barrel price several years ago.Not Cheap. That
and him losing interest in guns. Is why I might end up with it now for a project.
I had just asked questions hoping to figure out a way to end up with something
I would enjoy and save all the original engraving that goes up the barrels. But I
have a engraver friend (Ken Hurst) who I am sure would match it for me if I decided
to go that way. But Curl as I am old and senile and subject to change my mind. If I decide to get it and it's turn
off the project wall. I might have different ideas at that time. But it will not be based on worth
as at my age that is not importan anymore. But thanks again.

Reminds of the photo I received of the destroyed Piper Seminal twin aircraft that a jealous husband/boy friend took a chain saw to. Apparently the wifey/GF was riding more than the airplane.

Blain don't know about that.As I lived and live out of state from him.But I know at one time
He loved and collected very high quality engraved guns. Not as a shooter but for the history and craftmanship. With cost not being a problem. And she ruined about 20. The only ones that escaped
Was a cased set of colts. In his office safe.
