Victorian rabbits.
      #153896 - 16/02/10 09:08 PM

There were about 25 or so around the burrows,I saw them on a mates place as i was coming out from some early season deer scouting...didnt have a deer rifle let alone the trusty 22.

Yes, they're getting out of control again. Look how bare the ground is, despite the rain we've had this summer.

Hoo-boy! just like shooting gophers, but MCUCH larger targets. You'd have to set up at least 450 yards away just to make it 'sporting'.

Are those European Hares? The pictures appear to give them a rabbit's longer ears - but?

Daryl old buddy I for one know the diff between rabbits and hares after a lifetime of shooting them..they are rabbits mate.

Besides my positive ID the Euro brown hare is not a burrowing animal.

There is a bracken fern patch about 60 yards away that if I can get off my lazy ring could sit in with the 22 and head shoot them as they come out of their burrow`s,no meat damage for those that like a roast rabbit.

My old mate Bob did the same thing when I pointed out a heap of rabbits one arvo,he went back and shot 60 off a large warren later that evening.

Mmmmmm, my dog and I both like rabbit to eat. He prefers his a little rarer though.

Rabbit in casserole, also cooked with cream. Yum.

Never tried roast rabbit yet, do they Weber well?

Regarding large warrens, if one is lucky to find a big one, and somewhere rarely hunted, sitting still near it, with a .22 and popping the nasty bunnies as they come out repeatedly in the morning or late afternoon is very productive.

However I have never shot 60 unless spotlighting in good station country. Nothing like those numbers at home.

Yes JH the old rabbit can be very tasty,i was almost reared on it as my old man was a shooter, trapper, ferreter etc and I joined him most of the time.

Young rabbits roast up well,`ol mum always stuffed them with breadcrumbs, herbs, onion, spices, bacon etc with the addition of minced apple to promote moisture throughout.

My own fave is for about third grown cut in pieces rolled in spiced flour then shallow fried in a heavy black cast iron pan.

And you are right about the old 22 even with its rainbow trajectory, they are fantastic and quiet for sniping rabbits over a warren pre sundown...head shots only mind you in this camp!

I have a 220 Swift with a 6-18 L on it ... but I much prefer the up close fun of the .22 for sure. the Swift comes out when the rabbits get a bit human shy and thus one can sit back a few hundred yards and bust away.

G'Day fella's,

Gryphon, that image Made My Day!
Every time I see a Road Kill Bunny I think, Oh what a waste!

Fella's I have traveled to most parts of the South Pacific hunting all kinds a critters but bunny's still get my heart racing!!!
Shotgunning them as you walk them up or spotlighting them, .22 or .222/.223(doing the same) or setting my portable bench rest up at long range with my switch barrel .22-250AI live varmint rifle.
Bustin Bunny's, is still some of the best days Huntin or Shootin to be had!

There used to be a property on the shores of Lake Eucumbene, opposite Buckenderra called "Deeban".
This property had a Off-Site Manager and a good mate of mine from up that way (Dynamite Dave), knew the manager and got us onto Deeban. This was back quite a few years ago, prior to the introduction of Caleci(?) Virus. Any way the last two times we visited Deeban, Five of us shooting 12 gauge seed guns shot over 1500 odd rabbits on one weekend (Friday night, Sat, Sat night and Sun)! We went back there one month later and shot 1053 more rabbits!!!
Oh for the "Good Old Deeban Days"

So come on Bunny's, breed up for Hommer! Please!!!

(Edit by Hommer, I personally don't believe a reasonable number of managed (read, regularly shot)rabbits, cause any more damage that a herd of poorly manages stock animals.)

They do, Hommer, if your horse treads in one of their holes while you're rounding up the said stock animals.

HA! - didn't even think about that - you are absolutely right Gryphon - the Euro's 'back home' SouthWestern Ontario didn't burrow either. The snowshoe hares here only dig a bit to secure 'homes' underneath logs and such, and burrow down into the snow to get into and build snow-caves under bushes covered by feet of snow.

Sweet and sour bunny stew is a super supper.

G'Day Fella's,

Paul, you need to get with the times and get a Petrol Pony?
Two or Four wheels, they don't need to be caught every time you need them, don't leave "Land Mines" all over the place etc, etc!
Just kiddin mate!

Yes I can see how the bunny burrows would cause some problems.

Sorry Hommer,
I am thinking back about 45 years. The only motorbike we had was Dad's old BSA, in pieces beneath the shearing shed.

Cheers

There seems to be an Australia wide phenomenon with european rabbit population explosions every where.
I am seeing rabits in places where they havent been for over 30 years.
And that is the general opinion in most of WA.

Back in the early 70's it was nothing to shoot up to 500 pairs in a single night out on the Nullabor.
They were gutted, chilled and either sent to Adelaide or Perth by rail for human consumption.

In Spain the hunt with dog and gun. And when they do damage to agriculture, the competent authority for their hunting with ferrets, introducing these into their burrows and hunting them with the shotgun. It's funny because this form we call "a loose bull.
