Blaser vs. all the rest
      #155737 - 08/03/10 05:11 AM

I'm a new member. I owned a Krieghoff .500 but went through a tough patch about five years ago and had to sell.

I'm in the market once again and would like your opinion on Blaser versus, say, Krieghoff, Heym or Merkel. I'm left handed so that complicates things somewhat. A dealer told me that Merkel doesn't make a left handed stock, but a cheek rest isn't critcial. Smooth is okay.

Thanks.

Had a Blaser S2. Actually, had two of them. Both broke - stock, forearm, bullets crossed at 25 feet, patterned like a beat-up 12 gauge, handled like a 2x4 stick with two pieces of pipe lashed on.

You get the idea I don't like them? Buy a Krieghoff or Heym. Stay away from Blaser - far, far away!

What calibers were they chambered in? What were the circumstances?

How can anybody consider to buy a Blaser S2 ? That will always remain a mystery to me. Why not buy a good double like a Heym or Merkel ?

If you had a Krieghoff and liked it you should try to find another one. First Stop in Rapid City has a 500NE lefty that is currently listed as "sale pending". Keep and eye on it, it's listed like that before but the sale fell through; it might happen again.

He is pulling your leg - Merkel do make lefties - here is mine (left triggers, left stock):

500Bo, first off glad you made it through that "tough patch" and are back on your feet again. We've all been there.

I agree with poprivit and Kalunga to stay the hell away from a Blaser!!!

You can't go wrong with a Merkel, Verney-Carron or Heym (in order of price). Having owned several of all three, I feel that the V-C is by far the best "value". If you can wait a few months you can have the V-C made to your dimensions and specs. Ken Buch at KEBCO is the U.S. importer and all around good guy.

I see that you also live in Virginia. Come on down to the double rifle shoot we will be having at the Southern Side by Side Championship at Deep River on April 23, 24, 25 in Sanford, N.C. (about 20 miles south of Raleigh). It's a great informal fun shoot. KEBCO will be providing a V-C for people to shoot. We are working on which calibre. Hell, hopefully I'll have my bespoke V-C .500 by then. If so, you may try it along with one of my Heym's.

No personal knowledge of Blaser S2's but CChunter of these forums had one in .470 and had a lot of trouble with it not regulating as well. Believe it may have been returned.

I shot a Blaser double in .500 NE. The stock had zero cast off and just about broke my cheekbone.

I think he finally got rid of it this fall. Seems as if it lost regulation without delaminating?

I would stay well of blasers dr, but could concider a kipplauf or drilling, but would never pay for one.

Thanks to all that responded. That's basically what I suspected. Just like the Sabatti DR's that are being made for $5K.

I just finished Boddington's "Safari Rifles II" and he mentioned that he handled a Blaser double, but didn't shoot it and he didn't want to comment on a rifle he didn't have shooting experience with.

The main reason I didn't go the Krieghoff route again this time was the six month wait to have the left handed model made. I was hoping to find a used left hand model and have seen quite a few Blaser's for sale.

Thanks again to all.

Thanks for the insult. FWIW, I'm on a fixed income and saved money for 2 years to buy the first one. Then traded it back to the dealer when it broke. Second one broke and I got my money bak.

DELAY GRATIFICATION!!

Wait for the bespoke (V-C) gun made to your specs. It's not that difficult. Good things come to those who wait.

http://www.gunsinternational.com/B-Searcy-470-NE-BLE-PH-Left-Handed.cfm?gun_id=100086392

I ran across a left handed Searcy .470 for $11,500. I checked the Searcy website and he's asking $18,000 for a new double. Sounds like a pretty good deal. Anyone know what is meant by "drops 1 3/4" and 3" from sight plane?

Me again. I finding quite a few good deals on Merkel's, but they're all right handed. Anyone know how much it would cost to have one made into a lefty?

This refers to the stock dimensions. Drop at comb 1 3/4"; drop at heel 3", both as measured from the sights. On a shotgun the measurement would be from the rib.

Okay guys, I have another angle; let's say that I find a really good deal on a double, it's right handed but has a stock without a cheek rest. I've used side by side shotguns all my life and was never bothered by the trigger configuration being set-up for a right handed person. Is this really a "big deal" or is it something I can deal with. I'd be curious if there are some lefty's out there that have some experience with this.

I mean, I watch Craig Boddington use right handed bolt action rifles all the time as awkward as it is watching him work the action, I've done the same thing using my father's rifles before buying my own left handed rifles. I would bet he has used right handed doubles on safari many times over the years.

Any thoughts?

No not a serious issue. It will work. I too have grown up on right handed rifles, however when I was about to get a double it was all about finaly getting a true personal thing. Perfect fit on all counts was mandatory. For me a tailor made double rifle does make a difference and yes you can call me a snob in that case - so don't bother.

P.S. JPK from this forum is lefty as well and he uses his right handed MT with pleasure.

Kindest regards,
