BSA Sporter Wreck - Shooting 8mm from 303 barrel
      #152045 - 27/01/10 10:17 PM

I got hold of a ex BSA gunsmith to get soom parts & ended up with express sights , dustcovers & a BSA sporter wreck or at least the barrel of one on a action .
He told me how to lead lap the bore & in his day they forced a hardened steel ball bearing down the bore to square up the rifling (I think that was it) .
Well I took the old girl home whacked a bolt in it her (Oh, spent 2 hours getting most of the rust out of the barrel frist) & shot a 3 shot group (patten) , group 1 , you can see , not too good tumbling all over the place , well I had some Norma 196Gr "318" diam 8mm slugs that I had gotten for my worn 303 Cape Gun , I loaded up 3 & shot them out of her , this is group 2 , to say I was surprised would be a understatment , this is at 25yds by the way .

Well now bugger me I have another bloody BSA to rebuild , I think I have 6 actions and bits , ever time I get some parts for one I end up getting another wounded one to revive LoL !

Clearest example of "keyholing" I've ever seen. Barrel looks like the same profile as military smle. I'd assume in NZ smle barrels are easy to come by. Cut and crown the muzzle, then install sights, sling mount, etc. By the way, I do like that sight, I need to find one like that for the rifle I'm building.

Sarg!!

Everything that winds up down there breeds like rabbits!!

Great thread, and I love your willingness to give it a whirl!

Keep us posted on the rebuilds. The very essence of Gun Crank-ism!

Sarg

I had a mate who I bought a 65 Carcano for - at his request LOL.

Let's say the bore was far from perfect, like yours full of crap, rust etc.

Anyway, the next time I saw it, the bore was nice and shiny
and I found out that he shoots FMJ's through bad bores to clean them up (after using Wipe Out to get most of the crud out).

FYI, Wipe out Foam bore cleaner cleans rust off really well
including really caked on rust. I found this out after using it on a "tin can" that had spent 6 months in the great Sand Pit where out Military forces are. Worst case of cleaning I've ever come across and it stripped it back down to the base metal inside.

Anyway, good luck with your project.

That group was shot standing to , might do better if I took more care .

500 - I have asked here about "Wipe Out" seems like we dont get it here in New Zealand ?
Sure would be handy on these wrecks !

Thank you , I will need a bit of luck .

Sarg

I have some of the new Patch Out coming shortly - 3 weeks
- and am sending some over to another forum member in NZ.

Send me a PM and I will look it up and see if you are in the same location then U can try it.

I was amazed at how it cleaned the internals of the silencer
- then again, I think most people would have thrown a gun away if it had that much rust on or in it LOL.

(And for the Gov't spies and before anyone asks, no it is not mine and yes, it was legal and registered).

re the ball bearing process, my 1968 Parker Hale catalogue describes at some length a process they call "Ball Burnishing" they apply to 303 barrels to bring them up to match quality - they talk of levelling out internal imperfections and work hardening the surface.

hope this helps explain

We really need one of those 'popcorn eating' smileys, particularly for this thread.

Sarg, I'm looking forward to whatever mojo magic you lay on this rifle. Are the markings on the barrel still legible? I'm interested in the left side, over the chamber - is there a 'sold out of service' >< mark and/or date?

This one will have to wait , I have a couple in the queue a head of it .

Had a bit of a set back , I thought I would try the lead lapp , well I now have a brass jag welded with lead in the bore , need to melt it out & try agin , or chop 3in off for a 22in barrel , which I like any way .

No "sold out of service" on the barrel , but on the action yes , on the left side has "303 Nitro Proved" with the Nitro up side down & BSA stamp on top , no date .

Now buckbrush thats unfair , I scrub up OK with a short dress and a bit of lipstick !!

Tinker , Its your fault Im stuck with all these damm 303's , after I had that WR , I just had to have one , one being the word not 6 then 8 soon 10 !

Sarg-

That WR is an absolute tart and I'm eternally grateful mate!
You're tops!
Considering all the flack that that was raining on me at the time, the WR was manna from above...

(can you tell I'm having fun with the smilies from the members-only section here?)

If I can ever get back into the sporting life again!
As you know I've been buried in the drag of digging us out of our California seat and over the Sierras into Nevada - the light of the high desert is looking more and more clear by the day!
Wife is expecting our third child this June too, so at least I can identify with your growing numbers issues, but on a completely different level!!

Cheers

I say RECOIL!!

Have you seen what Hubel is doing on his 12GA From Hell discussion thread?
I saw some 8-bore high-energy work he was doing on what looked like H&R single shot frames.
Ping him with a note asking what his chamber walls are on the 8-bore gun.

We're so close to the last steps of the 'Leaving California Dance' right now I can taste the border.
Still, every day is another fire-alarm with one issue or the other - I expect at least another couple of weeks of super high-strung drama before we know we're good to ship off.
It's that close, and it's been quite a tour.

I got called out the other night to bid a MotoGuzzi restoration and the lad who wants to commission the work asked if I'd accompany him on a fully guided/prepped/paid-for trophy boar hunt in the north of this state.
He's a fisherman and hasn't ever hunted any sort of big game.
I might just have to bring a couple of WR sporting rifles out of storage for that one!!
I'll let you know if the wee little .303 takes the bacon (and if the hunt pans out)
At this point I'd just like to get out in the woods and away from my responsibilities here on the homefront for a day - taking a big pig would be icing on the cake!

Cheers

As long as we're on the subject of chemicals for the barrel, there was an article in the November 2009 American Rifleman on the subject of bore cleaning that mentions Wipe Out and Ultra Bore Coat. Wipe out is apparently not kind to wood or oil finished stocks, so use caution. I'm intrigued by the Ultra Bore Coat, as it's intended for black powder use. The article can be viewed at: http://www.americanrifleman.org/ArticlePage.aspx?id=1945&cid=3
I'm glad the 8mm trick worked so well!

A refreshing look at the subject, 375BSA, it seems to me. I knew small-bore shooters thought cleaning affected accuracy but ...
