No ignorance at all.

The Joke was the comment made "These bullets turn the 45-70 into a big game rifle."

In the past, any mention of the 45/70 as a Big Game cartridge
cause no end of arguments.

Usually by individuals who don't handloaded and those who've never used handloaded .45/70 ammo on big game but have strong opinions which are hard facts in their eyes - is all.

Fair call - you can add "stirrers" to the pot as well LOL.

At the end of the day, it's a 400gn bullet travelling at XXXX fps - I have yet to find an animal that can tell the
what cartridge it comes out of.

Most people beleive the 45-70 has plenty of bullet weight and hitting power but penertration can be little lacking .
All I meant was that if these bullets cause damage like an expanding bullet but improve the penertration it can only be a good thing .
I have not hand loaded for a 45-70 but have for a 444 marlin and a bullet like the HSP from Woodleigh would help this round to no end.
Cheers Neale.

I fully understood what you meant and didn't have a problem with you saying it. In fact, I think you are on the right track.

The lack of penetration was partly because some 45/70 bullets are flat nosed.

It doesn't matter what it is fired from (cartridge wise).
the results will be the same on the animal, all else being equal.

Sorry if you took it wrong, but as said above, everytime someone says the 45/70 can take big animals all hell brakes loose.

No normally the stirrer trolls insert words such as "easily", "perfect", and especially "ideal". For example, "Is the .45/70 the ideal buffalo rifle".

Or stupid illogical concepts such as "penetration is increased if the velocity is decreased".

Of course a .45/70 can kill big game, I have said so many times, with a guy hunting cape buffalo with one, and testing it on a downed elephant when on a hunt one time in Africa.

But as for it being able to kill stuff such as water buffalo, well a mate shot his water buffalo mostly with a 6.5mm or a .270. Lots of cape buffalo have been shot with medium calibres as have elephant.

And this is where the word "ideal" does have its place, shot under "ideal" circumstances.

***

But back to topic, surely such a bullet is FAR superior in a lever action to these hard cast bullets? Safe in the magazine, can be driven at faster velocities rather than slower ones ie for the cast bullet not to break up, penetrate well, and allegedly cause a wider than calibre wound channel. I am yet to be convinced on the last one though.

JH why not try some for yourself cobber,I will get you a few if necessary mate. It seems so far every calibre used on buff n` bulls has done the job..and done it well I may add. There has to be something in them thats 'different' to be doing the job they are doing.
FB more game pics please using them please, its good to see game pics being posted.

My 358 Norma mag is still under way at the `smiths due to the barrel being supplied very late but its screwed in now and the stock is in the hands of the GS for bedding etc... Frank brought 60 hydro`s up for me in 358 so I`m going to run a few through it on sambar if I`m lucky enough to come across any.

Well John, I can say of the Water Buffalo I shot with them (Woodleigh Hydro's), the wound channel was definitely large than the bullet diameter.

I also had a Hydro and a normal Woodleigh SN out of my 465 hit 4" or so apart and follow the same track across the body,
of course one 4" below the other. The SN stopped before exiting, the Hydro exited. The wound channels were very similar.

I've shot enough buffalo and cut up hundreds more to know what a good wound channel is and it is definitely their
in Red LOL.

I purchased some 450grn 450cal Hydro's from Geoff at the Wild Deer Expo.
Keen to see how they feed from my FN M98 458Win.

I have some for the .375 but the tiny little packs hardly allow a load to be developed.

Hi John,

I guess that you will already know this but Shirley from Woodleigh says that whatever load your rifle is happy with in the same .375H&H 300gn bullet weight will be the same for these Hydro's. Mine is still coming so I am just repeating but this should help in the load development.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

Perhaps the tiny little wallet opening should be prised further apart to fund some more of the tiny little packs.
