Which action for a homemade double rifle
      #154556 - 23/02/10 05:47 AM

I was visiting a lokal gunmaker today and because you double rifle homemade guy’s allways scratching your head about the question of all questions

Which action for a double rifle project?

It may interest you to know what the gunmaker’s here in the evil empire use. I must say that this master has learning his business in Suhl like all other profesional’s here. He have allways one or two double rifle to make and this year after year. The price is fair. 2000-3000 euro depending on the work nessesary. All double’s he made are in 8x57IRS, because its what the common hunter here like and know. He had never have any failure’s with the action in all the time. I was asking him if its strong enough for the 9,3x74r and he doesn’t see a problem with this.

And whats now the starting point for his work?

….. any 16 ga double gun made in Suhl between 1950 and 1990 in good condition, this means the action is tight, is good enough to build a 8x57IRS double rifle from.
Any! Because they all the same!
Pre war is colleting stuff today and the new actions are hardened.

He allways let the barrels soldered in Suhl because of time and money. So he gets the rifle allready proofed from there back and finish then the rest.
The barrels are cut 70-80mm from the breech end( its maybe the shotgun cartridge chamber length) and then the rifled barrels will be soft soldered in the shotgun barrel ends. New barrel ribs are soldered.
he can guarantee for the barrels shooting together in a 4 cm circle on 100 meter distance.

thinking you like to see

pic's

new made barrel set, proofed in Suhl

the muzzle end

the red arrow shows the line between old shotgun and rifle barrel

the muzzle again

this is a similar rifle but close to be finish. Its having now recknagel sight’s and a Suhl claw mount.

Nice rifle, your profile says north and that would mean north germany?
At least that rifle looks as if it would be made by a german for germany.

Thanks for posting this. Are the barrels threaded and then soldered into the mono-block? Or are they simply soldered into the mono-block. I suspect strongly that soft solder is plenty strong enough to retain barrels without having to thread everything.

Lancaster

Very interesting.

The other thing is, this guy is obviously a professional gunsmith and the rifles are properly proofed. In my mind
that is good.

So if home made and then proofed, would that be ok also?

Lancaster, then there still a couple of countries to choose from. Most people dont know that we once helped sawing the western world from speaking french.

I did some calculations using published figures for Hi-Force 44 (4% Ag, 96% Sn): Shear Strength = 14000 psi to 28000 psi. Assuming a 12 ga gun, 2.5", 2.75" and 3" barrel shank lengths, and .800 in. diam., AND shear strength of only 2000 psi, I calculate the following max. loads to shear the joint:

2.5 in., Area = 6.28 in^2, load = 12500 lbs
2.75 in., Area = 6.91 in^2, load = 13800 lbs
3.00 in., Area = 7.54 in^2, load = 15078 lbs

If I assume a shear strength of 14000 psi, I find the following:

2.5 in., Area = 6.28 in^2, load = 88000 lbs
2.75 in., Area = 6.91 in^2, load = 96800 lbs
3.00 in., Area = 7.54 in^2, load = 105600 lbs

My conclusion: a positive mechanical lock is probably unnecessary for a relatively mild cartridge.

Yes, I just think proof puts it up there in case of a mistake.

Hell, even the UK proof house has failures and how long have the poms been building guns ?
