Building a .303 double
      #153862 - 16/02/10 06:28 AM

I am in the process of building a .303 double rifle using a shotgun as a donor. The shotgun has the double under lugs, gusseted root, greener cross bolt and hidden third fastener (on the tang)and pesky sideclips. I am making a monoblock now as I want to retain the shotgun barrels. I have photographed the process as I went along altho I am now waiting for barrels which will be 4-6 weeks.
I would post the photos and explaination of what I have done up to now if anyone is interested. It should be noted that this is the first double I have built and the second monoblock I started, (first one is in the scrap). The block has been fitted to the action and all I lack is fitting the cross bolt prior to installing barrels and shaping.
There are quite a few photos. I am following Ellis Brown's book and also using information from this site. (Ronvella's post was very helpful so far).

I too would like to see the pitures of your work and to watch the rifle as it progresses.

Re: Building a .303 double ( photos) [Re: Rolland]

I started with a piece of 4140 annealed 2 1/2 inches square and milled the bottom lugs. They were left .004 over size to allow for fitting as they are tapered. pretty much straight forward milling.

I drilled the block and reamed it to allow for threading I used 3/4-24 as I had the tap and die. This is kinda where things get slow as both ends of the block has to be cut at 89 degrees to allow for it to line up when fitted to the action.
I used a spud to help aline the holes after reaming and before running a tap through.

These are the spud and barrel mock up to check and see if things were going according to plan.

After threading the block I set it back up and cut the tang and inlet for the extractor.

Machining the lugs was a somewhat different problem I did not have a cutter for the back lug and had to maching it with a standard round mill coming in from the side the back cut was done with a 3/16 round mill and filed to fit. The cut for the hook is 8 mm or .335 that was a cut and smoke until it got a 100% fit. Every thing else was hand cut.

Success after 40+ hours of smoke and fit and using many stones it fits and locks up with 100% fit on face. Waiting for barrels then the block gets cut to finished outside shape. I also started the forearm iron as I will make one for this set of barrels.

The next step is to fit the cross bolt and wait for barrels.

Got the extractor cut and fitted as well as a new cross bolt. The extractor is made from tool steel and drill rod shaft. Hope this will be enough, used silver braze to hold everything together. The original cross bolt seemed a little short where it fit into the off side of the action so I made another one just a tad longer I am not sure it was really needed but it was something to do while waiting. It too was made from drill rod. Every thing now is waiting on barrels that are still 4 weeks away. geeze I thought everybody stocked .303 barrels. I am going to need a new stock altho the original is servicable if this works out new wood will be in order. Finding someone that can duplcate the original had been somewhat of a problem but its a ways away so just keep looking.

I ordered the barrels from http://www.mcgowenbarrel.com/ I have never used them before but they had the caliber and the contour I wanted.

I finally got the barrels and have them turned and threaded and fit in the monoblock. I am waiting "again" on a chambering reamer and will finish fitting the barrels and shape the block. Its getting closer. A lot depends on what the doc says tomorrow about what they are going to do with my gallstone, as to how soon I get back to it. Anyway here are the latest photos.

Rolland,
Awesome build, story and photos! The step by step photos really do show the whole process very nicely.
I love watching these rifles come together. The workmanship shown in these builds is truely outstanding.
Really looking forward to seeing more on this .303!
Thanks for taking the time to show us!

Rolland,
Lovely job so far. I sure envy you the milling machine. Unfortunately, my shop is in the basement with no possible way of getting one down there.

Best,
Ron.

Well I am back at it after "minor" surgery, don't ever let the doctor tell you something is minor. That gallstone kicked my butt. Anyway enough whining.
I have got the barrels fitted and am progressing along shaping the monoblock to the receiver. My chambering reamer is on its way "I think" so I should be ready soon. Still am pondering the soldering of ribs and quarter ribs. I also need to find someone that can tig my pieces in the barrels.
I made a spud and cut a nut the same size as the od of the barrels. I screwed it into the block to hold it as well as use that nut as a sacrificial piece to shape the block so I don't remove too much. I put a wrap of tape on the nut so I will know when I am getting close.

Hi Rolland

I plan to do a double in 22 Hornet on a 410 SxS action. Yet to find a suitable donor action though. Can I ask please, what shotgun action did you use for your 303 project? Depending on my success with the 22 Hornet I would like to also do one in 375 Flanged (rimmed), not the H&H version.

Cheers

Kev
Look under shotguns on this site and my name you will see the gun I am using. I don't know how to do a link.
I would love to do a 22 Hornet but 410 shotguns are a premium and I have never found a suitable one.
I got the shotgun from http://www.simpsonltd.com I hope to get this one finished soon, got one barrel chambered tonight so its getting closer. My next one (if I am still sane) will be a 400/450 or simular on a 12 guage frame.

Whenever I read about a project like this and see photographs of the work in the various stages of the project I wish I had learned to be a machinist. I can turn wood on a lathe but that's about it. Keep the pictures coming as time permits. Living vicariously is better than not living at all.
