2005 australian hunt
      #15344 - 30/05/04 07:09 PM

Finally, after leave the Polar Bear for 2006 (or 2007), I'm thinking seriously to try a couple of autralian buffalos next year.
I looked for an old message and you told me:

En respuesta a:

You can hunt Water Buffalo and usually in the same area feral Donkeys, Scrub Bulls, pigs, Dingos, some areas wild Camels. I last hunted in Northern Territory and took Buffalo, Scrub Bull, Donkey, pigs and 3 Dingos No Camels they where few hundred miles south of where we were and of course you can observe Crocodile ,which are protected, with your special camera .

En respuesta a:

In addition to the game animals named above some hunters also try for Banteng and Sambar deer on the Coburg Peninsula. Permits are limited though and expensive so book ahead if you are interested.

Also scrub bulls.

Plus a lot of international trophy hunters also hunt on properties in Queensland - Northern Qlds for Chital, Red stag in the Brisbane and Mary Valleys, Hog deer in Vic. Goats in the plains.

Also wonderful Rusa in New Calendonia and of course red stag, sika deer, sambar, chamois and tahr in New Zealand.

My main animal will be buffalo , but I wanna try more species if possible (Dingo will be fine ).
Please, tell me more thing about this hunt, I meant, best areas, best dates, best outfitters, etc..

Thankx

For Buff it will be the NT, the top half. For camel its the NT, lower half and some parts of South and Western Australia. Dingoes have been put on the protected list in the NT, not so in Queensland. In most areas with buff they will have pigs, donkeys, scrub bulls on offer, as well as some good barramundi fishing. I've never hunted with a guide so can't comment on who's the best etc, but here are some guides taken out of a Aussie hunting mag.

Thanks, I'll take a look into this sites and I'll ask for prices.

Probably I'll book with a spanish agency. This used to be a little bit more expesive but I know where they live if something goes wrong . Anyway I need original prices to compare and I need to know how's the hunting and the good areas for a +150 buff .

470Nitro

Become you actually book anything either post who they are here or drop me a PM/email.

Also once you define more what exactly you want to hunt, how, where and how long, discuss it here or again PM etc. "Hunting Australia" is like hunting Africa or hunting Europe. Long distances and lots of different places. Pretty hard to do it all so some choices must be made.

***

If hunting Australia, this is what I would recommend hunting:

Water buffalo, feral pigs in the NT, maybe scrub bull;

If you have the money available I would add banteng and sambar deer if you can get onto them;

If you don't get onto sambar in the NT, I would see if an outfitter could do a good sambar hunt in the Victoria Alps. This will be real hunting. Maybe hog deer in Gippsland for a few days if the right time of the year.

You could consider doing a feral hunt in Western NSW or South West Queensland for goats and pigs plus maybe some roos under permit. You would have a chance at pigs in the NT but this is a "traditional" Aussie hunt. Not high class but usually relatively cheap and the ability to shoot lots of game is enjoyed by many visitors.

The only place you can hunt/shoot roos is Australia so why not. I just discussed today some options in exporting them and will look at this seriously..

Axis or Chital deer in Northern Queensland.

I would consider New Calendonia (in the South Pacific) for a world class Rusa deer.

New Zealand for chamois and tahr, maybe sika deer. Sambar can also be hunted in North Island NZ and the free range hunts 'seem' to have a higher chance of success there.

There are numerous other game animals.Such as fallow and reds, but you can hunt these at home. I think I posted a list on another forum and I will copy that to a new thread here for your (and others) use.

Now I have helped you spend several months in the South Pacific and thousands of dollars .

I'd love to catch up with you when you are here, I'm sending you a PM.

I forgot.

As a Spaniard I have heard you fellows like chasing bulls around or is it being chased by them

This fellow seems pretty good at finding them.

He finds these! What a great trophy to hang over the dining room table. Look at those horns.

He is our own "4seventy" (your own namesake!), Alan Moon.

(Seeing he doesn't blow his own trumpet, I thought I would do it for him.)

Thank you again dudes.

My outfitter here in Spain offers 7 Days hunting 1x1, 2 buffalos included for "just" 10.000 US$. I think I'm going to look for some more, may be some red roo or Bull.
I don't wanna go to the opposite side of the world to hunt just one week. I would like to hunt, at least, 15 days, if possible, in the same area.

What's the best month to hunt buffalo???

The big red kangaroos are not as far North as where you will find the Buffalo. They are desert animal and live in dryer climates. We sometimes see them near where I live but usually in droughts when they move into the hills for fodder because of drought.

The Eastern (and Western) Grey kangaroos are more common.

To find either of these you will need to travel further South.

The Top End will have wallabies and maybe Euros. (Bakes can you help out?)

We have the agile wallaby and a bloody great roo that the parks and wildlife blokes told me the name of but I for got. Don't think it was the Euros, something else. I'll find out. Either way you'll need permits for roo's. As far as I know I don't think there is much of a roo industry in the NT. South Australia/New South Wales/Queensland would be my pick for that.

The agile wallaby used to be hunted but of late has been protected. It still gets hunted alot by station hands, as the numbers have sky rocketed. A couple of parks and wildlife blokes got in the shit a few years ago when they were caught shooting wallaby's for croc traps. Now they use pigs

Mate you should do better than 10 grand US! You should be paying in Aussie dollars for a start. Best time to hunt up my way in the build up, about September to November. Its HOT, humid and most of the ground water has dried up, concentrating the animals. Fishings good as well. Bring a camel back as you can never get enough water and get some of that poweraid powder once in contry.

No one else has mentioned it here that I've seen, but there was an article in The Bulletin a few weeks ago on Penfold and NT trophy hunting [at Gan Gan]. The journo didn't quite grasp what it was all about, methinks. Closer than many of his ilk though.

Article [text only] is available at: here

There's also an article in the current Aust Shooter - a bio and mention of the upcoming auction of his trophy collection on 8th November. He seems all set for retirement, according to this article - business on the market, moving house etc.

Cheers,
Doug
