Alaskan Shooting
      #152960 - 06/02/10 06:18 AM

Several members of this forum had a great day at the range yesterday. A pretty large assortment of big bores were there to try out.

( For you Ozzies info.. that white stuff on the ground is just solidified water.)

Speaking of Ozzies...

C'mon, you Down Under types...are you going to let the Frozen North leave you behind in the dust?

Give us a table or two of doubles to oogle over!

Mike; great pix and looks like a heck of a day at the range!

G'Day Fella's,

I would like comply 9.3 but I still don't know how to post images on-line!
Given that, some may say that I more than make up for that short fall, with my verbal waffle!!!

AKMike, I'm still getting over the physical size of the Massive Cartridge laying in your(?) gloved hand!
Please let us all know what Gauge or cartridge/caliber, that mighty beast is?

That's a 4 Bore Hommer.. Even though he Omnivorious Bob had several loads for it ranging from meek to mild it hit on both ends. None of the rest of us have tried the full house loads ... YET!

It really isn't bad with the lighter loads. That beast weighs in at about 16# as I recall. It takes alot to get that thing moving in the first place. I'd describe it as a very firm push, not a neck snapping shoulder cruncher. But with the full load it just might be? Bob could tell yoiu much more about it.
It's a wonderful piece of craftsmanship.

But as things stand now.... (Don't hold your breath)

I'll ask one of the other guys to handle it. Several of us are on here also.

One of these days we'll have a bigger collection than shown.
It's hard to get everyones schedule to work together. I bet that when we have the spring fling it'll have alot better turnout.

A question.

How well do double rifles function in very cold temperatures?

I was looking at a Siberian bear hunt once and was interested in taking my 9.3mm Valmet. I was told a bolt action is better as the double could freeze up. Or something like that.

Now you guys should be pretty clued up on this subject!

Sorry John I didn't see this.
I haven't taken any of mine out in sub zero (f)/ -16c temps. I have taken my Chapuis out at freezing and other than a bit of arctic grade auto grease on the hinge. I didn't do anything to the lock assy. Because of the freezing rain/mist/snow I put several heavy coats of Johnsons Paste wax on everything. Then electric tape wrapped over the ends of the tubes. It worked fine that way for a black bear.

We did have another shoot today but the temps were just a few degrees above freezing. Everything worked well. I'm sure that Omni-Bob will toss up some new pictures here.
We had new shooters and 'new iron' also. Stay tuned!

John, I haven't used a double below freezing, so other guys are probably more versed as to if there are any issues. Some AK shooters have used theirs for musk ox and other winter hunts and hopefully will chime in.

As Mike mentioned, we had another fun shoot today. In addition to the fine fellows at the last one, we had the pleasure of being joined by HorseDoc49 (Ron), Leigh, Randy, Cal, and AKshooter.

In addition to last weeks doubles, this time we also shot an 8-bore Manton, 7-bore Locke, 577 2.75" Bland, 8x57 over/under, a 338 (Ferlach?), Rodda 475NE, a 450 BPE, a 450/400, and a 577 Snyder howdah.

Manton 8-bore, Bland 577, Rodda 475, 450 BPE

Brett with Manton 8

Mike with Lock 7-bore

Buff target a bit worse for the wear!

577 Snyder

Cal with howdah

It was a pleasure meeting and shooting with you guys. I look forward to many more shoots in the future.

Bob

I was thinking this would be an ideal hiking / fishing gun. The bears have been rather social in the last few years. It's great to see the these doubles and this fantastic howda here in use in Alaska. Great shoot there with that collection of doubles.

Pedersoli does/did have a front loader Howdah pistol at one point. If it was half as much fun as this Snider,,, It'd be a royal hoot to shoot.

Love that Snider round. It makes a good short range stomper in my Snider enfield, but in a hand held SXS classy cannon like the one in this post, it would be very comforting in bear areas here. It would be alot more convenient to carry on a salmon trip than the 10 lb 32" barrel 3 band rifle!
