Now that indeed looks like a short range bear stopper!

It would be interesting to see the howdah with a recoil sequence of photos, as it looks like it might jerk back serious (?).

Thanks for another fun set of photos. Some big cannon displayed there.

The recoil with those loads really wasn't bad at all. Many of the modern hand cannons are much worse, but they don't have the lovely smell of burned black!

I wonder if they load that Snider to the nuts with 110gr. or stick to the underloaded (well under case capacity) load of 85gr? I suspect a 'factroy-type' load would kick quite enough. The Pedersoli's are in 20 bore snooth, and .58 rifled, with a detachable shoulder stock.

Daryl, the loads we shot were 70gns of Goex Fg under a 450gn .590" bullet. That was plenty. Actually it felt about like a standard 44 load, with a little bit of finger bashing. The virtues of the curved stock were apparent as it rolled up during recoil and felt milder than with a tight two handed grip. I fired a few at the 50yd berm to see the impact at that range but was blocked by the smoke every time. We shot the tiger target at 5 yds in keeping with the 'up close and personal' spirit of the gun. I would absolutely love to use this for black bear from a tree stand one year! After I get a chance to do some chronoing and load development I'll post the results and some better pictures here.

You should make it up to Anchorage some time for one of our shoots, as many guys here share enthusiasm for your type of hunting arms. 88M, come on out too!

Love to Bob - the year after my wife retires, we're taking off to travel around North America. Got lots of people to visit - several indeed, in Alaska. The 14 bore will travel with me - just for Rendezvous and play.

That .57 Snider would make an interesting Black Bear round.

It would indeed be fun to poke one with it. 70gr. is a good charge for a handgun of that size.

I shoot 55gr. 3f in my .54 flint pistol with 220gr. RB and it about duplicates my .44 4" Smith, but had less felt recoil due to stock shape. It cracks pretty good. I can imagine how that Howdah belts and rolls.

Mike and Bob..Isaac Walton Range. Use to shoot there from 2000 to 2006. Great range. Never ran into you Gents, wish I had. Great pics..

Gents:
I should have my Wilkes .600 returned from a friend Texas by then and will bring it to the shoot. Hopefully my 4 will be retuned from Griffin and Howe and that will be there, too. The last shoot was a super time with like-minded folks. All doubles with the exception of Rob's 4-bore Bland--and that is a beautiful rifle even though it is missing one barrel.

That sounds good to me!

I chronoed the howdah today and got an average of 608fps for 5 shots with a 450 grain bullet for 369 ft-lb. It feels heavier than that. That was with 70gn of Goex Fg, from a 41oz pistol with 7" barrels.

I think I'd try 2F, Bob, starting at 60gr.(& appropriate wads) and go from there. 60 of 2F might give similar speeds to 70 or even 75gr. 1F. I suspect 2F might get the speed up over 700fps, maybe even 750fps, without increasing recoil to an uncomfortable level.
The long barreled ctg. guns do well with 1F, but I'm sure the results might be better with 2F. It should be a lot more efficient in the shorter barrel lengths.

It did quite well like it was Daryl. I actually hit the dirt berm at 100 yds within several feet of a bowling pin target.
