Description:
R.B.Rodda Hammer Double Rifle .303 British. This beautiful African plains game double rifle has color cased sidelocks with external hammers. The wood is Fancy to extra Fancy, with fine checkering on the capped pistol grip and the splinter fore end. The borders of the sidelocks and the fore end latch are engraved. Both locks have gold bars inlaid and engraved with the makers name. The color cased action and trigger plate have engraved borders. The breech is lightly sculpted and engraved. This gun has a Greener cross bolt. The action on this extractor gun is tight and the bores are bright with good rifling. The monogram plate is inscribed with a crest and motto. The express sight has a fixed blade marked for 100 yards, and two folding leafs marked for 200 yards and 300 yards, all with white center lines. The rib is cross grooved. The barrel has a sling swivel base installed, but none has ever been installed into the buttstock. The stock has tear drops behind the locks. This gun has been proofed for a maximum load of 38 grains of Riflelite powder.

I just posted this under my alter-ego "DRarchive".

I noticed it on GunsInternational this morning. It looks like it might be a dandy .303.

It's hard to beat a good .303 British double. I have two and don't need another. So somebody please buy this to keep me from doing it!!!

Seriously, I have nothing to do with the rifle. I'm not endorsing or trying to sell it. Just saw it on the WWW.

This seems like a massive rifle for a .303. Nine pounds,six ounces is the right weight for a .450 or .470 NE. No mention of whether the hammers are rebounding.

Strange to refer to it as African plains game rifle, when the seller was located in Calcutta.

Judging from the photos the hammers appear to be rebounding. The weight is fairly heavy but not unusual for a .303. I like mine lighter also.

My observations:

Probably a new butt stock. Otherwise why is there a sling eye on the barrels but none on the butt? Nice looking job though.

Barrels probably re-blacked. Obvious carry wear on the under side of the action with no corresponding marks on the barrels. Trigger guard looks to be re-blacked also.

Case colors may be original.

Dunno whether it would have had flat top checkering originally. The Birmingham guns are seen with sharp checkering.

It looks like it might be a pretty good .303. But again, I know no more than what the photos show. If I didn't have two already I would be on the phone.

Nice gun indeed.
i saw it last night when it poped up on gunsinternational.

I have only one complaint about toplever-hammerguns..One has lay the hammers down first before opening/unloading the gun. I experienced that in SA last year where I borrowed a Jeffery shotgun. The hammers are in their way for the lever..something you wouldn`t see with a underlever gun.
Its a nice and beautiful gun..but for me I`D rather a underlever(jones) .303. The more I get experienced/knowledgeble with with jones system the more I hope somebody will replicate the action again .

Good evening Gentleman, Yes this little rifle is one the way. A kinda early Valentines Day gift from my wife. It will be a nice addition to the 8-bore I got from Degoins, and the 500 NE I bought last year. I'm afraid this double rifle affliction is very contagious.
I have ordered some 215gn Woodleigh's for this rifle. Do any of you knowlegable Gents think this is the projectile for regulation? Was thinkin 2150fps would be a nice deer, pig load. will just shoot the irons for some nice inside 100yd hunting.

It probably was regulated for the 215 load. You will have to carefully try loads to make sure.

Most if not all the older 303 sporting rifles were regulated for the 215 gn projectile.
The recomended MV for the Woodleigh is 1800-2200 if my memory serves me correctly.

You are correct on Woodleigh's rec. vels, I hope to safely, and within regulation reach 2150 fps. w/ the 215's. I also hope to work up a load that provides enough accuracy and power for clean kills on deer and pigs for now. This is my first english double, am planning a buff and plains game hunt for 9-10. Provided this little rifle shots w/ enough accuracy,? would it not be a cool addition for a few head of plains game this fall? Thanks for any advice or opinions.

Let me assure you that the 303 is more than suitable for taking deer,pigs and most large plains game.
In the early days ,not so long ago,asian buffalo were mainly hunted and culled with the 303 here in Australia..
You will enjoy hunting with this calibre.

Thank You Sir, thats the kind of info I have been seeking on the 303. Real world experience. That makes me feel more comfortable about the rifles capabilities. Would I be correct in assuming the weight of the buffalo You speak of to be in excess of 1500lbs? And if so the little double should do an admirable job on anything I'm likely to use it on. Im partial to heavy for caliber bullets, and the research so far has been nothing short of spectacular on the 215 Woodleigh for the 303 British.

The average water buff bull probably weighs better than 800 kilos ,so yes more than 1500 lbs.
I haven't shot a buff with the 303 yet but it will happen one day!
I've been with a hunter that shot some with a 303 and they were all one shot kills.
I've never had a problem putting down camel,scrub bulls,donkey,horse,deer ect with my 303 using 215gn Woodleighs.

Lovely looking rifle. I love the look of a hammer rifle. For a long time now I have thought of a 303 double, I hope you get immense enjoyment from hunting with and shooting yours.
