Hi Sarg,

I am away from my library for a few days, but I will see what I can find. It looks similar to the Jeffery peep sight that my friend has on his Jeffery Mannlicher sporter, built on a Steyr 1897 receiver. Was this sporter retailed by Jeffery? If so, then that's probably who made it.

Where did you find the picture?

Cheers

Hi Sarg,
Apparently someone else had the same idea like me! It looks like another altered P-H #16 sight with it's windage knob on the left side. Possibly he made a new base from scratch, but then hecould have changed the knob to the right. I am to lazy to file a new base! Have a look at my thread in the "Classic firearms" forum!

There is a dove tail cut into the rear of the bolt where the sight is fitted.
I am absolutely sure that somewhere on NE this question has been answered before.
I believe it was Marakai, who had the info so will give him a call.

Thank you for the reply guys , that would be great Al , I cant tell for sure , but it looks a little like there are jaws that hook over the raised back part of the SMLE bolt nut , I think some thing like that could work , Im just guessing ?

I found the pic on the net some where with no details with it , really when I frist started on the internet , I would find a site that took you to site & so on & then I was lost & could never find that site again !!

Also I never put a heading on my pics , so did not know where the Hell they came from .LoL !

As the cocking piece of this old Lee is roughly T-shaped in plan, on can file a corresponding slot in a sight base to affix it.

Further research has come up with the name Rob Zimmerman whom resides in the US.
Apparently he manufactures about half a dozen of these sights every 6 months.
So does anybody know Rob?

Yep, I own three of the Rigby type sights manufactured by Rob Zimmerman (Rusty)

rusty42marlin@yahoo.com

I'm looking forward to having them mounted on three rifles I have under construction.

I still believe the one on the Lee-Speed to be a modified Parker-Hale #16 like my "Ersatz Sportargets". Here is a photo of another one , this time on a M-S M1900, taken from about the same angle like the Lee. It merely has a slightly different, later elevation collar.

The one shown above by jc5 is again a Lyman #1 on a special base by Jeffery like shown in their pre-WW1 catalog, and the one offered by Prechtl is the Rigby copy I mentioned in my thread on "Classic Firearms" forum.

I just got a couple of these peep sights , which I think can be modified to make a nice bolt mounted peep sight for a Lee Speed , nice & tidy looking !

I just got this Lee Speed that I have reason to believe was made in 1898. Don's ask, I'm not saying why for now. A couple of things: The peep is cut into a dove tail on the cocking piece and seems to require no elevation knob or dial. It clicks up and down by hand for (presumably) 100, 200 and 300 yards. There are 3 horizontal lines with click stops on the back of the sight. The rifle was retailed by W. Horton in Glasgow. I have no idea if they fit the sight or if it was a later addition. The other unusual thing about this rifle, is that is says "Lee Speed Patent" not "Lee Speed Patents". How do I post pictures?

This sound like the Rigby style and has been mentioned above Rob Zimmerman rusty42marlin@yahoo.com
makes a sight like the rigby. I have one on my 1908 DWM and love how it works. He is a great guy to deal with and very reasonably priced.

Would be interested in seeing your sight 375BSA as that would be a simple solution to the sighting set up for a fake Lee Speed.

While I figure out how to post pics, send me a PM and I'll send the same pics I'll post later on the forum to you. Another thing I need, that will be shown in the posted pics, is a block that was soldered to the barrel under the rear (standard) sight. This receives the forward screw attaching the fore end wood to the barrel, for those rifles with the forward sling swivel on the barrel, forward of the wood. I have a very early Lang and Hussey that was re-barreled in South Africa, it lost on re-barreling, the wood mounting boss, the forward barrel mounted sling eye and the original fish belly magazine, all to accommodate Mk VII ammunition for war service. I'd also love to find the forward sling mount and magazine!

Two posts up is a picture of the lug part I need for a rifle that has been re-barreled, with an SMLE commercial BSA barrel. Yes, I know I can make one, and will, if it comes to that. I suspect there is one that is forlornly sitting in a dark drawer somewhere...As previously mentioned, it is for a Lang & Hussey marked BSA, likely from 1897 or so, that was re-barreled for war service in SA. I also need a BSA fish belly, small magazine.

Hi Sarg, here is the same P-H peep sight butchered up, front end with the screw holes cut off and silver soldered to the firing pin nut of my M1925 8x60 Magnum Mannlicher-Schoenauer. Just to provide an idea.

I have the same striker peeep as ALAN_MCKENZIE on my Mann. Haenel 9x57. It seems to be versatile for many applications.

Thank you Kuduae , you have some great stuff there , it was your idea that had me looking for a good one of thse to convert , but there may just be one model made to fit the MLM MLE SMLE , I have one that fits a early model , but on the volley sight holes , works well on BSA sporters , not on hole less Lee Speeds , could be a bolt nut model yet !

Ahhh Gentlemen sorry for being a little late the P-H sight is a Model 11 and was made in several forms to fit onto the firing pin nut. The 11M was for Mauser the 11MS for the Mannlicher Schoenauer My 1962 catalogue does not mention the Enfields as they advised using the reciever mounted Model 16F fore those.

Now I have been considering "butchering a damaged P-H 16 to fit the missing slot on my Mannlicher Model 1903 but that's as far as it got.

Now the nice little tang mounted sight is a Model 10 and they all known as the Sportarget sights.

Hope that helps.
