Anyone want to jump on a time machine and go back to 1941? I have no connection to this auction - just thought it deserved a mention. It's the cleanest original sporter I've ever seen.
I wonder if he'll get that price, though?

Its been on GB for some time IIRC. Maybe the little gouge in the stock is the reason why? A shame as it is a lovely gun as you point out.

Really? I've never seen one that "perfect". It makes me wonder if it's been lovingly re-blued and refinished, but I doubt it - it has the look of a brand new rifle. There's an indefinable quality of "newness" about it.
The dig in the stock hurts. I think even without that, he's aiming high price wise.

Am I seeing things or does the 3rd lug on the bolt have a groove milled/cut into it. Not that it matters...

You are right! Jon Speed in OOSR, his first Mauser book, page 288:
"Around 1940 a Mauser engineer designed a special bolt detent pin, which kept the bolt firmly locked down and required an extra effort to lift the bolt handle. This detent pin was integrated into the sear mechanism and extended up through the bottom of the receiver to enter an axial groove milled into the third (safety) bolt lug."

$4k is about top money for a typeB for me even in that condition.
For $2k more, there is a typeA with a cocking piece peep in absolutely stunning condition at Martini & Hagn.
Now that is a proper Oberndorf Mauser! (IMHO of course)

I've been eyeballing that Type A for some time now. Almost pulled the trigger a couple of times. Wish it were in a different caliber.

Funny, isn't it.
I feel the same, but really, it is in arguably the most versatile cartridge for an open sighted rifle.
If I think too hard on this, I may talk myself into it...better stop now.
