Hi,
looks like Pedersoli made a good move.
Cabelas offer a .58" pistol.

.58 cal. is well covered by many moulds in many slightly different close sizes, round ball and slugs as well as traditional minnie 'balls'. ie; .562, .570, 575, .580 - RB moulds - slug and minnie moulds from .575", .577", .580", .585".

Being a Pedersoli, it will probably shoot RB's best. I would use a .570" ball and .018" patch, or a .562" ball and .022" patch. Pistols usually don't shoot more than about 60gr. of powder and that will give a good charge. Pedersoli will tell you the max charge for the asking.

I own one of the 20/20 smoothbore pedersoli howdah pistols, got it in kit from at Dixie.

It's truly a ripper with tightly patched .600 roundball on 70gr FFg Goex.
With this load it prints them right next to each other, right over the bead at 35 yards.

That powder load is essentially the same load I'd been running in one of the 16-bore rifles - had the old powder measure (dipper) from a cased set on the bench that day and 'filled her up' with Goex.
The sound is glorious.
The recoil is about what you'd expect, and the pistol handles very nicely.

The .58/.58 (with a 1/24" rate of twist, by the way) appears to be a new offering in the pedersoli line and I might have considered it when I got mine (couple or so years ago) but in retrospect I'm glad I got what I got as it's very consistent with the big powder charge, and it runs nicely as a shot-pistol with less powder and #5 shot.

In field terms, especially where it'd be practical - 35 yards is about the max distance you'd expect to encounter something needing a gunshot in the woods.
The 20/20 does it - and it's versatile.

Cheers

IMHO this is not a pistlo but a "pocket rifle" as you can also buy a detachable stock.
A good gun as coach gun.LOL.

24" is the perfect twist for reasonable loads in a .58 Pistol with round ball.

Where have you seen a detachable stock for the Pedersoli Howdah?
I haven't ever seen one.

There are plenty of tired back action hammer shotguns around.
Why not build a roundball smoothbore howdah from one?

As last seen in "Mad Max" (or "The Road Warrior"). Need a good set of leathers and a Pursuit car too.

Never has a cut down double shotgun looked so good. I saw Mad Max 2 way back in 1982 and I knew even back then (at the ripe old age of 14) I wanted a double shotgun. Just like Max. And the V8 Interceptor and leathers would be a nice bonus.

1982 was 28 years ago. Now I can see the double shotgun and the V8, but do you really still want the leather pants ??

No I could live without the leather trousers.

A double 12 bore handgun purposely made as a handgun would be OK - here. To cut down a shotgun, even re-stocking it, would make it prohibited - ei; sawed off shotgun.

You can shorten a shotgun to an overall length of 24"(which is really shot and 'nasty' looking, but it must still be designed to be shot with two hands -ie: visible and useable butt stock. This means the barrels could be very short.

However - first cop or game officer who sees it will confiscate it - gauranteed. You'll get it back, but it will be gone and you might even get a ride in the back seat of his/her car. At least, if a game officer sees it, they'll call the police and hold you until a PC arrives.

No explaining on legal lengths will work - they aren't interested in what's right or wrong according to the law - only that that shotgun has been cut off and looks bad enough it should be illegal - such is the system here.

Legal barrel lengths are subject to semi-auto's only - 18 1/2".

Amen. I don't even wear blue jeans anymore. If I need work trousers I pull on a pair of Carharts. A few weeks ago my kids were watching old videos of my wife and I. The videos were from 1988/1989. I saw myself running around in very tight 501 Levi jeans. Good god! I don't remember those being like that. I do remember all the hair that used to be on top of my head however.

I chronoed some rounds through that Wilkinson today and got an average of 608fps for 5 shots from the right barrel, for 369 ft-lb of energy. That is with 70gns of Goex Fg under a 450 grain bullet, and from a 7" barrel.

The left barrel has a much much lighter trigger pull and I was able to get groups of 1.25" at 15 yards. The right was much larger, and also printed much higher and to the right than the left barrel.

The gun weighs 2lb 9 ounces and has 7" barrels. I'm going to try FFg out of curiosity, but think I'll stick to these loads for normal use to minimize wear. I'm also having a slightly larger mold made up (.592" and 500 grains w/solid nose) with a hollow point pin so I can vary the weight a bit. I doubt it will make much difference for a gun designed to shoot things at arms length, but worth a try.

I'll post the results here as I figure out more about this interesting piece of history.

Many original "percussion" side by sides, 12's, 14's, 16's and 20's have very good breeches, while the barrels might have deep dents or rust-through areas.

Chopping these barrels off at 10" to 14" will leave a good set of tubes, already joined and breeched, along with a useable double barreled tang. Re-solder (or JB) filling the ends of the ribs and replacing the bead leaves a good basis for making a Howdah pistol - completely legal - here.

A set of back-action or side locks are available from Track, along with triggers, trigger plate, gaurd, etc.

It's a simple build for anyone used to using chisels and a draw knife.

The above would be correct if it were a modern cartridge firearm. However, this is a muzzleloader, and not subject to the Federal 18" minimum bbl length for a smoothbore with a butstock.
