404 Jeffery project underway
      #150089 - 10/01/10 05:45 PM

Well my 404 project rolls on.I purchased a Brno ZKK 602 from Alex Beer that was formally a 458 win.I had it sent to Tony Small of NIKAL TRADITIONAL GUNSMIHING to have all the metal work done.Tony fitted a quarter rib & express sight,a barrel band and a barrel band ramp front sight. He also made a new trigger as I couldnt find one of the ordinary curved triggers that they came with and I really dislike the idea of a set trigger on a dangerous game rifle. All of the extra's are from Graeme Spraggon including the 24 inch Walther barrel and Recknagel gear.He also supplied the quarter rib bar stock which I think is great value as it has already been cnc machined to fit the barrel and they are untouched on top to let the gunsmiths do their thing.Graeme can supply these to fit the #722 & #724 Walther profile and Tony said it saved him a lot of time and me a lot of money.
Geof Slee has supplied the xxx blank with nice figure that I hope will come out as nice as my 9.3.
It is on its way to have the stock made by Daryl Stevens who also did my 9.3.It will have 2 cross bolts , skeletonised grip cap ,recoil pad (red),inletted swivel base, bedding & 26 lpi checkering done, then it is back to Tony to be rust blued. Will keep you posted,Cheers Neale.

Way to go Fatboy, the .404 is getting the nod nowadays, I'm just waiting for a Lothar Walther barrel I bought off Hommer to turn up in the post. My action was pretty rough when I got it and I'm learning about a whole new world whilst removing all the pitting and marks the previous owner put on the action trying to clean it up. I notice on your action it has double square bridge and the Brno logo on it as well, mine only has a single square bridge and no logo etc. Mine actually has no markings at all, it didn't even have a serial No. when I got it. We must have a different variations of the same model, do you know anything about the variations. I've only seen actions like yours or heavily engraved ones from the factory.

Cheers, Bill

Tony put together my 9.3 and is currently working on my 7x57. I've had a good look at your .404 and you will be very happy with it.

A .404 should be a great BG and DG hunting rifle.

Would be worth considering the 450grn Woodleigh FMJs when working on loads.

G'Day Fella's,

Congratulations Fat Boy!
As mentioned by all the other .404 fans, you have made a great choice in both Action and Cartridge!

Nice looking rifle, even in it's unfinished state!
Keep us posted on any progress on this project!

010166, I imagine/hope you should be receiving your .404 barrel today or early this week!
Also, see Fat Boys note on the 1/4 ribs that are available to suit the L/Walther barrels.

Thanks for your comments.
BILL, I cant really help you with the variations of the Brno's but maybe you could ask the question as a seperate post ?.

TOPHET1, I think 7x57 is another great choice.I had one years ago but built it with a 24 inch #5 profile barrel that took away from what 7mm's are all about (punching above their wieght). If I had of made it smaller and handier I would still have it. Tony certanly gets through his work !.

OZHUNTER,I was thinking along the same lines as you. 450 grain Woodleigh RN & solid @ 2150-2200 ? What do you think ?.

425 cal, 450grn and SD of .361 at around 2200fps takes this calibre into the category of calibre acceptable for early season Elephant hunting IMO.
And certainly great for deep penetration on game like Buffalo.
I haven't used this load yet, but if I ever get around to building a 404 up (have all the components) I will most certainly use these bullets.

Fatboy, Had a look at your metalwork at Jim's on Monday, pretty sure he called you about it.
Thought I'd let you know I'll take it and the wood to Darryl on Friday. I've got to take my 416 Taylor to him to finish the stock as well.
You'll like the wood, we wiped a wet rag over it and it's going to look very nice, quite a bit of contrast and lots of really nice colours in it.
Gonna look good when it's done.

Thanks 450.We will have to work out your courier service fee!!
I hope the wood is straight and strong enough. It is a worry when you buy wood sight unseen.
We need to see some photo's of your 416 Taylor and tell us what your building it on.

Guys

Re the Brno ZKK variants - I'm pretty sure there aren't any - not from the factory anyway. All that I've ever seen or owned have been double square bridged.

I have a lovely old custom stocked 602 made in 1967 (generally the earlier they were produced the better the workmanship and the smoother they are) .375 H&H which is a bit redundent now I have the MS 9.3x62. I keep thinking I should have it converted to a .404. This thread isn't helping!!!

Can someone please post contact details and some info on Tony Small please? I'm always looking for custom gunsmithing options - especially ones who can do rust blueing.

Cheers.

GG

Fatboy, don't know if I'm game enough to post anything, it's about as opposite as you could get to your classic firearms.
If I do, I'll start it as a new topic, rather than "dirty up" this one!
Darryl's home Friday morning, so it's all go to take the wood down.

I had my final stock fitting today for the 404. It is an old 602 stock that split like they all did.
I got Daryl to basicaly copy my 9.3 stock but beef it up a little around the wrist area and leave the butt to match the full size of the Pachmayr recoil pad.
When I close my eye's and shoulder the rifle, the express sights line up perfectly when I open them.
I dont think I could get a better fit. While I was there I fitted my scope to see how the stock was with it and while I didn't have full cheek support it was fine. As you all know you cant have a stock that fits perfectly with both iron sights and a scope.
Daryl will now use this blank to cut my stock from my blank. Will keep you up to date as it goes but should be finished by the middle of Febuary.

Cheers Neale.

Hi Neale,

Your having great success with the various projects that you have undertaken. This is the first time I have seen how the stock maker makes final adjustments so that the stock suits you personally.

That's another step on the way to Africa,

Cheers Mate,

Jeff Gray

Here is a couple of photo's of my stock after one coat of oil. Still needs some filling but should be ok. The 404 is now on its way to Tony of Nickal Traditional Gunsmithing to have the sights filed and regulated.
Tony is also going to hand lap the bore for me to save some time in the break in period.
Then it is to be polished and rust blued.
Will post photo's of finished rifle when I get it back.
Cheers Neale.

Hi Neale,

Your project is really going ahead, the stock looks great and practical. I notice a few "Subtle changes" around the pistol grip area, looks nice.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

Neale,
That piece of wood has come up really nice, or it will when it gets a few more coats of oil on it.
I'm really glad its coming along so well, I'm sure you will be happy with it when you get to shoot it.

David.

Well it is finally finished.
It has turned out everything I had hoped for.
At a touch over 11 pounds with the scope it is nice to shoot even off the bench. The load I am useing is 82 grains of 2209, CCI magnum primer and a 400 grain Kynoch projectile for 2251 fps.

The express sights print the bullets about 2.5 inches high at 50 yards with a 6 oçlock hold.
Nothing more to do now but practice before I get my chance at a Cape Buff in April.

Heres a photo of my first kill with the 404.
Cheers Neale.

G'day Neale,

Its great to see this has come of age and in a really good timeframe too!

THe rifle is magnificent and well you know my thoughts on the chambering. Good luck on the dark continent and IF you need some prac loads may I suggest scrounging some 429 JHP's and swaging them down and using those as gallery type loads. I am sourcing some data from ADI ATM for this load and will keep all the 404 fans posted!

Regards and good hunting,

MOG

Very, very nice rifle there Neale and a good standard 404 load you have developed. I'm sure it will perform as expected on any DG. Where did you score the 400gr SN Kynoch projectiles from, they look like the old originals? That big blue nose will sure put a buffalo on his.

I bought 400 of the 400 grain Kynochs from Rebel Gunworks for $80 a 100. Cheap hey!.
Before you ask, there are none left.

Thanks for your kind words eagle27. Cinghiale, good to talk to you again and keep me posted on your findings.

Talk soon Neale.

OZ. On my range I have an 8" square gong at 50m and I have no trouble ringing it everytime off the shoulder. When I settle on a load with my scope I will play with the open sights some more to make sure they are right for that load.
