new Knife
      #149894 - 09/01/10 12:07 AM

I recently commisioned Roger on this forum to make a knife for a friend of mine as a gift for his help in my Buff hunt in Oz last year. It arrived today and I am very very happy with it. I am going to try to put three direct photos on now. The handle is made from a chunk of wood or more accurately the base of a briar type tree that was in my garden down here in Spain, it was dead and me and the gardener spent 3 hours on a "Shane" type mission digging it up ! Good fun though, I have a fair size root left so if anyone would like a bit let me know. it has been drying for about 3 years now. You pay postage though !!! best, Mike (p.s. Roger posts as RSF Knives and his prices are reasonable)

Very nice knife, Mike. The wood reminds me of some my father used for some furniture but I can't remember what type it was.

Very nice gift, Mike.

Great job, Roger!

Mike, that was a super idea in giving the knife a personal touch.

I make knives here for my own use and for friend's {nothing near the quality of Roger's} and I make grips from locally-grown Mountain Maple, serviceberry or antler. Somehow it just seems better than way.

G`day Mike, size wise around 120mm as a finished length of handle,a few more mm`s to rub off i imagine would suffice if you had a piece in that range.

Mike this is the answer from my cutler. Thanks JG.

The handle scales I use are usually around 130-140mm long, 40mm wide and 10-12mm thick. So if the briar root is in one piece go a little bit more generous on the thickness, say 30mm, to allow me to bandsaw it to size.

Just saw this post Mike and I know you have already sent my "pow" but wood coming into Aus is treated as suss as it can harbour some insect we dont have..IE the sirex wasp came into Aus from europe and has played hell with our pine forests.

Customs are strong here..(except for stopping drugs!) At the worst it will have to be gamma irradiated like any other natural material.
