      #149506 - 05/01/10 01:15 PM

Griffin & Howe .30-06 Custom Springfield Rifle with Zeiss 4x and G&H Scope mount.

Circa - 1936 G&H serial number (on Barrel) #1218
Condition - Almost Excellent. Gun is perfectly clean throughout. The only real detraction is the trigger guard shows some scraping along the outside edge (see pics). Secondly, the front sling stud has some marring around it.

Features - 22" barrel, Lyman receiver peep sight, Barrel-Band Front sight, Checkered bolt handle, Buffalo Horn Forend tip, Jeweled Bolt, extractor, Magazine follower and magazine shelf, Widows Peak Buttplate with trap-door, Turkish Walnut stock with hand cut Fine checkering and Cheek piece,
Original leather Scope case and lens covers.

I picked this baby up after years of searching for the right one for me. here is a slide show:

Superb. Absolutely the quintessentil G&H '06. Congratulations. It really is worth waiting for "the right one", isn't it? When you find it, it makes all the months and years of waiting disappear in a flash.

Beautiful rifle! You need to do away with the "almost" in "almost excellent."

Will look forward to some great hunting and trophy pics when you take her out.

Thank you all. This is simply the finest bolt rifle I have had in my hands. I know there are many of you that have some real beauties but for me, this is the "ideal" rifle for me. I can't imagine a better fit. I am honored to have it in my care and hopefully will pass it on to someone when I have drawn my last breath. I'm not one for growing attached to "things". I can appreciate many things but I think this one has quickly become my favorite "thing". I very much appreciate your comments. I am going to do some investigating and see if I can dig up more history. I plan on taking it to South Africa in 2011 along with my 450/400 double for a multi-spicies hunt there. In the time between, I'm thinking lots of range time, and perhaps hunts for antelope, elk, caribou, whitetail and mulie are in order for 2010.

Gorgeous, classic rifle - love the dark, streaked wood, the zielklein. We talk a lot about the great English and German guns, but there is still nothing better than one of these early G&H's.

Nice, early G&H! Quite unusual bottom metal. It leapt out by not having the G&H signature 'thumb print' checkering. Strange that the front ring isn't stippled, either. I was admiring how nicely the bottom of the Lyman 48 was rounded along with the stock's feed port when I went back to the close up of the trigger guard. It appears to have little work to knock off any of the sharp edges which is strange compared to the rest of the rifle. I wonder if the bottom metal was replaced somewhere down the line? From the pictures, it appears to be well fit. Have you had a chance to open it up and check for any wood fit marks in the stock? Please don't take this as throwing stones at a great rifle. That's what makes the G&H rifles so interesting, they all have differences. Thanks for pics of a neat rifle! Good hunting with it, also!

Could you post some photos of the Lyman 48 sight? I would be interested in seeing how they streamlined the base of the sight...that is something I never thought of until now.

Sahib, don't know if you were requesting pics from me or Mike. I don't have access to my rifles now, but you can clearly see in Mike's pics above how the bottom of the Lyman 48 slide and base are contoured in a smooth, tasteful manner. Details like this are what makes these rifles so fascinating to me. Its not that a workman today couldn't do the same detail finish but back then they did it as part of the job. G&H, Hoffman, and Owens seem to typify what we think of as an American custom rifle these days but there is so much lost in the details of the modern copies.

That rifle could give the most rabid PETA vegan a real moment of clarity. Have you contacted G&H about provenance? For fifty bucks you can often learn quite a bit about an individual gun. If you uncover anything interesting, let us know!
Best,
Malcolm

Wow, Very nice! There are alot of parts and charactoristics of this rifle that scream pre-war Sempert & Krieghoff Suhl Germany!I wonder if G&H sourced parts from them or outright had rifles put together by them? The forend tip and especially the butt plate with trap are Sempert & Krieghoff items. Any oppinions?? Kevin.

I see this gun now for sale on Gunbroker. Why are you selling it?

the rifle has its letter with it. it was one of two bought by a Dr. here in the area. His widow sold both. the used one has gone somewhere. this one is unfired. I do not believe the rifle had any after factory work. G&H is providing a letter to me. They want to see the rifle also. It is on Gunbroker. My house was run into by a Van and the house was destroyed. those things that somehow are never covered (guy had limits) have forced the sale.

Will your homeowners insurance take up any slack? Seems a real shame to unload the rifle because of some underinsured schlub, especially when it took you so long to find the right one.

My homeowners paid most, unfortunately, not all. they return to original however simple things like bricks not the same size now as then, lighting fixtures can't be matched, upgrades and such and put a significant damper on things. I will weather this storm. thanks
