The Warthog Thread!
      #149488 - 05/01/10 05:26 AM

Post your pigs. Here are photos of few of my favorites.

Largest wartie to date, got him with an arrow from a grass blind, Limpopo Province, RSA on the border of Botswana.

Another view of him:

My first wartie ever, he was killed in Natal 2004.

A few years later I got this one, a sow, also from Zululand.

Close up of the head, neato huh? I have the skull in my living room, this one is truly special.

Some pigs begging for crackers at the tent in Hluhluwe.

Another Limpopo sow.

This one was in very poor condition and was covered in huge lice. I was VERY careful to keep my hair away from its body and was rushing the PH to take the photo.

I prefer to hunt warthogs with the bow. I always seem to find a wartie or two each time I have traveled to Africa.

Warthogs are indeed fun Anne. And tasty too!

I'll try to dig up some of my warthog pictures too.

Nice pigs. I shot this one in the Limpopo Province at 300 yards.

While hunting Eland this fellow ran across the trail, the 9.3x74R Merkel 140 proved ideal. Limpopo 08.

Here are a few from our Limpopo hunt, in July 2008.

My pig taken with .45-70 Guide Gun, using 300 gr. nosler partitions.

My son's wartie taken with NEF Handi Rifle, .30-06, using federal factory loads, 180 gr. nosler partitions.

My buddy Doc, with his toad of a warthog. Taken with a Marlin 308MEX, and factory LE ammo.

Doc's son, with his wartie. Taken with a Ruger Hawkeye .338 WM. and 250 gr. accubonds.

Of all the animals I hunted over there, warthogs were my favorite. Here's a pic of a couple coming to drink.

Allowed to escape!

A brace not so fortunate.

The Valmet 9.3x74R scores a piggie.

What calibre is good for turtle?

Another couple below. One did not make its hole in time.

Another culled wartie.

Seven warthog taken with Karl Stumpfe of Ndumo Safaris, one a trophy beast, six taken for farm workers for the holidays.

Here's a Warthog I shot in Chirisa Zimbabwe, unfortunately he was about 6 miles from the
the vehicle. We happened upon him while
tracking some buff. The trackers quickly fashioned this set-up & made packing him out
look awfully easy. They stripped bark off
some small trees to use as rope & had him trussed up & ready to go in just minutes.
I love "bush" ingenuity!

He's one of my favorite African trophies, I ended up doing a full-body mount on him.

My shield of culled warthog tusks from Namibia.

Minus two stolen by the taxidermist/frieght forwarder. It was listed as a shield with SIX sets of tusks on the manifest. The trophy set destined for a warthog shoulder mount was also missing and stolen. Replaced with the help of tophet, a NE member. Thanks.

John, I like that shield. Very classy. Pisser about the stolen tusks though.

I agree with you Mike, I haven't seen it done this way before and looks good. It is a worry if the people entrusted with your trophies are 'Tealeaves" but I guess impossible to stop.

Warthogs, like our own boars, are something I could happily hunt many times. Are there places where warthogs are more prolific, and more are able to be shot on a single safari?

The taxidermist/freight forwarder were asked to make the warthog tusks into a shield etc. The rest of the trophies were dip and pack only.

Guess what they wanted for that shield?

Something like $800, and prices that were similiar to full shoulder mounts for each dip and pack item.

I told them at those prices they could keep them as I wasn't paying. I think I had to pay a still high price, from memory $200 for the shield, and a more reasonable price for dip and pack.

Perhaps the missing bits were revenge? But I doubt it as everything was already sealed and packed.

I have developed an intense distrust of taxidermists. The taxidermist to whom I sent my Cape Buffalo horns and hide for mounting, and also a Zebra skin, has disappeared. Mail sent to him is returned and his phone has been disconnected. A friend of mine who took a Bull Elephant on the same trip had used this outfit in the past and recommended them to me. Oh, my friend's Elephant tusks and hide that he sent to this taxidermist following our safari are also missing. At least we have the photos and video.

That's really sad, Mike, to loose your cape buffalo trophy.

Hopefully it can still be recovered somehow oneday.
