Webley & Scott .303
      #149258 - 02/01/10 02:44 AM

I suppose with the new year I should share some photos of a recent find. Another .303 DR. This one a Webley A&W C Screw Grip made in 1937, wearing the name of Webley & Scott. It's hard to turn away from a .303 double.

Curl...wow.

Beautiful rifle.

Great PRACTICAL VA deer rifle, too. Great pix!

For ignorants like me, how about some comments regarding the 215 barrel stamp and proofs for 174. Is that common?

Rod,

I don't know what was common at that time. This rifle was proofed in 1937, and obviously for the Mk VII round. That round was the standard service cartridge at the time. My guess would be that the proof house subjected all .303's to the Mk VII proofing standards as a matter of course.

Once the rifle passed proof, W&S was at liberty to regulate it for whatever .303 load it wished. Obviously they chose the traditional sporting round with its 215 grain bullet as evidenced by the barrel inscription and the charge tag. That round generates significantly less pressure than the Mk VII round - 17 tons as compared to 18.5 tons for the Mk VII.

Perhaps 400Nitroexpress will chime in with comments to your question. He is a scholar of such matters and an expert on Webley. I can tell you he has expressed some interesting observations about this particular rifle.

Thanks to all for the kind comments on this very interesting rifle.

What an amazing DR! Congratulations on an amazing find. Unfortunately, I have kids to put through college, so Webley & Scott or H & H will have to wait for now... Here, here to your good fortune! Christopher

I love the lock up. What does the rifle weigh?

From the short radius grip, perceived bulky stock and LOP might it be built for a lighter framed person or woman??

Another beauty!
Congrats.

Noticed the grip radius too. Were the English making some doubles with the tighter radius grip more frequently in the late 30's than they did prior? I have seen some other "late" English guns with hints of American styling in the grip and the comb such as this Webley.
Perhaps it was ordered with these dimensions specifically(?)

Cpt Curl,
What a beautiful rifle you have there, let us know how it shoots,I have a G,Gibbs Farquharson chambered for the 215Grn .303 (ie it has a .3" throated chamber)The problem is I cant seat the bullet out far enough to touch the rifling!

Curl,

Beautiful gun, I really like the fact you have the hang tag with it. It gives some nice information.

It's interesting that it has a full length rib for such a late rifle and the A&W action without drop points.

This is the latest Webley DR I have seen.

Great find!

Curl,

Well done. It went to a worth owner.

We absolutely need to hook up for some shooting, when it gets warmer.

I love those .303 doubles, never get rid of mine.

Stunner, how does it shoot Curl ? Is there any factory loaded 215 grain ammo or similar or is it a handloading proposition ? best, Mike
