416 Rigby Fun in the winter
      #148653 - 23/12/09 10:39 AM

I'm outside plowing snow with the tractor today at our new acreage. I noticed beside the house is an old plastic rain barrel that's SOLID full up of ice. So I scooped it up in the bucket, and decided to plop it at the far end of the yard and have some fun.

The Rifle:

Brno ZKK 602 in 416 Rigby

The Load:

400gr Hornady RN Interlock, pushed by 81gr IMR 4350 @ ~2100ft/s

I setup 50 yards away, its the furthest I could get without walking in 4 feet of snow. I cracked off 3 rounds, just aiming for about "minute of barrel" I know the gun shoots, so I'm not after a grouping, just having some good ol fun. I wanted to find a dowel or something similar to check depth, turns out, I didn't need to, all 3 rounds were through and through's!

Some Pix:

Front of the barrel:

Walking behind I noticed some debris.... I didn't expect the rounds to go right though!

3 rounds, not a bad grouping either!

I was shooting slightly downwards, from 5ft elevated platform, and buried behind that snow is a backstop of rail road ties, never know, come spring I might run across the projectiles

Merry Christmas, hope everyone's having as much fun as me!

Sounds like you might need a metal detector sometime in the spring!!

Ha!!

Looks like fun.

Curiousity...

Ice is a weird medium. Sometimes it seems very hard, and other times, well not. And a shot that cracks it makes for easy on the subsequent shots. I was shooting frozen milk jusgs the other day with my 5.45x39 AK and was surprised at how much penetration I got.

I once shot a little goat that was walking by me, at about 5 feet with a .38-200. The bullet exited and I noticed there was a hole in the snow on the other side of the goat. I dug around a bit and found the bullet right at the ground.

What that means I have no idea, but it involved curiousity, a shootin' iron and winter...

Keep shooting and thanks for posting!

By the way, I just looked at those pix again...

Did those bullets expand?

Trev,

Nice and fun shooting!

Just curious here - was the 602 offered in 416 Rigby from the factory, or is this a customized rifle?

Good hunting!

Not sure if the Brno 602 was ever offered in 416, I doubt it though. Mines a custom I purchased as is, its my favorite rifle.

And I don't think the bullets expanded much at all!?!? Not good performance from an "expanding" bullet if they didn't

I went out later and shot it with a Remington Core-Lokt 30-06 from my 20" barreled Ruger No 1 International. Bullet didn't exit, but way more flying ice and larger entrance hole, so I'd say it defiantly expanded that bullet.

Tempature was -27C at the time, and the ice sure seemed hard. Barrel was so heavy I couldn't tip it over, had to use the tractor.
