I shot a 458wm today in a bolt gun.
The recoil was straight back. I have
shot 470ne ,500/416, in doubles. The
recoil was differnt. Is it the stock,
or the axis of the bore to sholder?
The 458 needs to be tamed. A soft
recoil pad and a reducer are in order.

Ken, what did the .458 weigh?
Most doubles are built to correct weight in the first place, whereas bolt-guns can be fitted with plastic stocks and without scope may weigh only 8 to 8 1/2 pounds. They DO need taming, though the recoil is not so noticable in the excitement of a DG hunt of course.
Add an extra pound or 2 with the reducer by all means, won't stuff up the handling of a bolt-gun much.

I realise that straight stocks are trendy today, but I still like enough drop in the heel, comb an toe to take about half of that recoil up instead of all of it coming back..I suppose that explains my preference for English styling in stocks over the American classic...

The rifle is 10 lbs.14 oz..
Maybe I should ask for other
techniques when shooting bigs
from a bench. I was ok with
the 375 ; but this was too
much.

With a 458 in 10# and change, you should have never been bothered with the recoil. How did you set up on the bench to shoot, did you hunker down low while firing it like you would shoot a varmint round? All bigger boomers must be shot with body as upright as possible. Whatever it takes to set up the bags in a hight rest is a must. Your body must be able to give with the recoil otherwise if you light off something really big, you can get seriously hurt or even get detached retinas.

One technique when shooting a large bore from a sitting position on the bench is to get some one else to do it. Try offering money.

I agree Ray. Add a cheek piece and you have the Wby stock.

Try a 25 lbs bag of lead shot as a recoil buffer on the bench, works great!

I used to just pile the bags high and ride with the recoil. The last time I shot though, my brother let me try his rifle rest with my .458 It has a strap in the back the stock fits into. It didn't actually move the rest that much and really let me see where that thing was hitting. Then he bought me one for Christmas, but I haven't used it yet. (too lazy to take with ) However, the next time I need to bench one of the BOOMERS I am not only going to have that with, but I'm going to put some sandbags around its base so it really stops the recoil. (the muzzle will just lift up and I'll have to re-align, but that's no biggie compared to detached retina!)

I have an International Bench Rest rest, that attaches to the bench and has straps that hold the gun..That removes all the recoil from the shooter and transfers it to the rest..It really works but they are expensive at about $450. but when you shoot as many big bores as I do it keeps the brain in place, and you don't get punchy..just forgetfull
A bolt gun pretty much recoils up and back or back or up..A double will recoil to the right and up..especially with a lot of cast off that most of them have and need..

What is the name of rest that you have?
Is this a commerical product?
How does the "strap in the back" connect
to the rifle and rest.

Any experience with the Angelo Zoli rifle? I went to look at one in 7x65 R. I shot the gun and it shot the width of the barrels apart plus about 1-2 inches at 50 yds( 6 RTs and 6 Lfts). It looks like a nice little thing engraved with game scenes and slightly figured light wood. Comes with leupold 1x4. Gun is tight. Barrels like new but it has the odd ding from hunting. 6 boxes of factory come with it and some 160 grn hand loads.

I have an Antonio Zoli shotgun, any relation? If so I like it very much. I think that the 7x65R would be a neat cartridge in a Double if it was light. Around 7 pounds would be nice.

I just obtained a 375 pre 64 Winchester
Model 70 this week. The stock has drop
in it. It shoots more like my double.
Why would a knowagable company make stocks
today that "kick the crap out of you"
when they know better? The Ruger 458
is still the winner. They never had it
correct so they can only get better.
