Another 9.3x62
      #148579 - 22/12/09 01:33 PM

I have got my 9.3x62 after a little wait but it was worth it . It has a 24 inch Lother Walther 1 in 14 twist #722 barrel with Recknagel sights & barrel band . The two bullets are 286 grain Woodliegh PP recovered from goats . Their retained wieght was 93% & 75% . The load was 58 grains 2208 , CCI mag primer & C.O.L of 3.24 inches for a measured velosity of 2400 fps .The goats were about 80 yards . I would like to thank Geof Slee for the blank , Jim Kent of Buffalo Gunsmithing for the metal work , Daryl Stevens for the stock work & Graeme Spraggon for the barrel & Recknagel gear .I am looking forward to getting to know my 9.3 & posting my experiences on Nitro Express . HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS & A HAPPY NEW YEAR ,Talk soon Neale.

Great post.

Very nice rifle!!

Thanks.

Interesting performance of the PP's...especially that you were able to recover them in goats.

Keep those posts coming!

They were recovered from full length body shots with penitration about the same as 300 grain 375 H&H Woodleighs with the same shot .

Beautiful Rifle. Will it be your light rifle combined with your .404 ?

(9.3x57, they breed big goats in Qld..)

If all the planets line up I hope to go to Africa early in the new year & take the 9.3 & 404 .I havent found an expanding bullet under 375 that will travel the full length of a pig or goat & exit . Even a 300 grain TSX 375 @ 2660 fps wont do it or a 350 grain Woodleigh 375 @ 2300 fps .

Very nice indeed... thanks for sharing

What was the Brno ZKK 600's original calibre?

Did you have any feed issues to sort through?

Cheers

Bob-
What's going on with your Mauser in 9.3? Last time I was at Todd's shop I got the chance to see it in person...another great rifle in it's own right.

Thanks for your kind words . It was a 270 Win originally & it feeds just fine . Jim just did the usual polish of the feed ramp . The extractor will jump over a round dropped straight into the chamber which is good .

Trey

Trey,

Oh not much (but keep reading). I'm glad you had an opportunity to see it! (I assume you're talking about Osa Johnson's Oberndorf Mauser sporter.)

The small amount of preservation and restoration work it needed is finished. Don't worry you Mauser collectors..... NOTHING was done to distract from its history and heritage. It just needed a little tender loving care.

The rifle is still at Todd's shop for now. I just haven't picked it up and brought it home with me yet. BUT, I'll let you in on a little secret..... Shhhhhhh! Don't tell anyone!

I left the rifle at Todd's shop so that a well-known gun writer could see, handle, and take photos of it. He and I have been corresponding for the last year or so concerning an article that he is doing on the rifle! (It does take time for a gun writer to get a publisher interested in the subject matter, do research, take photos and write an article!) Now, I can't say much more than that at this time. But, I believe that in 2010 you'll be able to buy the new issue of an annual publication that will feature an article on Osa's rifle.

Don't worry..... When I get the "go ahead" from the author, I will be sure and post on here the name of the publication and when it will be available.

So... Be sure to stay tuned......

Cheers!
-Bob F.

FATBOY404,

It wasn't my intention to hijack the subject matter of your thread but I did want to answer Trey's question.

Thanks,

Thanks for sharing another classic Type A Mauser especially with a nice history. Not sure if it's the lighting but is that a small split at the rear of the tang? Would be worth cross bolting the stock considering its age now do you think?

It must be the lighting in the photo as the tang was not cracked. However, there were some small cracks in the interior that needed to be repaired. A small crack was starting around the recoil lug. That was all part of the restoration and repair process that I mentioned.

Wood gets old and dries out over time as I'm sure you know. The fore end cap was also coming loose and that was repaired also.

I really don't want to add cross bolts as that would detract from its historical and collector value. Besides, I don't plan on shooting it very much.

Also, so we don't keep taking this thread off topic, be sure to check out my original post about Osa's rifle here:
