What happens regarding trophies when game laws change?
      #147449 - 08/12/09 04:54 PM

A local paper just ran an article about an Iowa man who was hunting elk in Wyoming and was attacked by a grizzly, which he killed in self defense. The article went on to say that grizzlies were recently declared federally endangered(I hadn't heard that but I'm not a biologist either) and the hunter is facing 6 months in federal prison and $25,000 in fones if convicted of illegally killing an endangered species. The story made me wonder, when a species is declared endangered are the hunting trophies now illegal to possess? Grizzlies were legal game animals for a lot of years, a lot of people spent massive amounts of money on those hunts and the resulting taxidermy bills. Taking it a bit farther, I'm sure there are some old hunters out there who still have a mounted bald eagle or something else equally illegal that they shot back when it was legal to do so. Is there some process to document that they have a "pre-ban" mount, or do they have to be turned in to the closest game agency?

Hi Shackleton,

That is a very valid point and all I can say is that re the story as quoted, I believe that it was self defence and if so, there is a saying in Australia and possibly the US that goes along the line of; "It is better to be judged by 12 then carried by six"

As for the trophy debate, the same has existed with Elephant, Leopard etc and providing it was obtained prior to the new regulations being implemented then it was legal and able to be traded.

Again, each country has it's own interpritation of this so it is still a grey area.

Cheers from Australia,

Jeff Gray

Yes, that's common here too. It is unfortunately also said in many states that if you shoot a bear in self defense and don't have bite wounds on your body you're better off killing another human(assuming self defense shootings). That said, if I'm attacked by a bear, I'm shooting it. I have this aversion to becoming a meal.

It wouldn't have been a good looking woman that was trying to eat you would it, so all bets are off.

none can be hunted in the lower 45 .BC IS your best bet and each outfitter is alloted very few tags they say may 200 are taken in bc a year.when i got mine it had to be checked by a ranger its 8 didgit spot on the map had to be identified, fat hair and a tooth were taken for dna tagging.a special shipper had to be hired. yea its watched close and grizzly hunting in bc is under constant attack i can see it end or be even more restricted translated only the rich will be able to hunt as the was the way of the stone sheep.
