Portable Standing Rest Prototype with photos
      #147316 - 06/12/09 10:54 AM

All,

Here are some photos of a portable standing rest that I am working on. Yes, it is crude,
but it is made of scrap parts and cost me next to nothing. If it works out well at the
range, I'll cover the foam with some cloth. The camera tripod lets you adjust for
height. It is not really very rigid. Maybe I'll make another to go on top of the sitting
benchrests at the range. Anyway, maybe it will give you ideas for one of your own.

Yes, it is left hand only. Actually, just flip the OSB over before attaching the tripod
connection and you have a right hand one.

You can see my homemade bamboo shooting sticks in the car window.

The top pieces of foam are not bonded to the bottom ones yet. The bottom foam is stapled
to the OSB.

Thanks for sharing!
Looks good.
Is it stable when extended?

I just put the wood stool on the bench and top it with a sandbag.

Martin,

The tripod is steady, even when extended. The
wood part is attached to the tripod only at one
location. That is what is a bit wobbly.

I tried it out indoors with a double rifle and
it seemed to settle down alright. When I test
it at the range, I'll know for sure.

Dave,

Your method is fine for the front, but I also wanted
some support for the elbow of my shooting hand. Sort of
like how someone bends down, holds on to shooting sticks
and you rest that elbow on their back/shoulder.

Nice design. I just picked up the heaviest duty tri-pod from a friend (free!) that I am going to make into a standing rest. It cranks up and down for height. I am going to mount a scope on it and just a sandbag to rest my hand on.

Looks wobbly. Maybe use more than one tripod?

NitroX,

I'm thinking of three pieces of lightweight
tubing oriented vertically to drop down and
clamp at three corners as outriggers of a
sort. They could conform to the ground, but
I need to think about a clamp arrangement.
I'll keep the forum informed as to progress.
