Is it a Sako or a Tikka

I have a Sako TRG-S 300wmag with a query about it...well its branded Sako and has M995 on the barrel.

Now a mate tells me it was made by Tikka and stamped Sako,his reason being that as the bolt release is on the right side instead of the left ensures he is right.

I haven't a clue either way so does anyone here know for sure which is right?

Is there a definitive book or website on this,I have looked at the Sako site but found bugger all to help.

Its not such a worry as it shoots well and rolls sambar stags but I would like to know.

This rifle has been sold with both names, TIKKA and SAKO.

At that time SAKO bought TIKKAs factory and that's the reason for odd rifles. Does TIKKAs 17 mm mounts suits to your rifle ?

Why is it an 'odd' rifle?

What I am trying to establish is if it was made by Sako or Tikka and branded Sako.

I believe the rifle was made before Tikka was taken over by Sako.

I have optilok mounts on the rifle and have never tried Tikka mounts.

I have seen that kind of SAKO -rifle only once and in that case the rifle was made by TIKKA because it had 17 mm dovetails for optics.

SAKO Optilock mounst have under parts for SAKO, TIKKA and Weaver.

Well after much searching around the net I was sent the name of Sako`s resident Chief Gunsmith...his complete answer to my q`s is this un-edited reply below...a few excuses for using his non native language.

Your rifle is definitely made by Sako,receiver is millet from same cold hammer forced steel block than TRG sniper rifle.

Production of M-995 begins in 1992 and stop 2004.Sako and Tikka rifles are made in same factory and same production line but in different price level and more simple designs in Tikka rifles.

Just some more details; the roots of the Sako TRG sniper rifle series are in the Valmet M/86 Sniper that was made in only 200 ex. before Valmet lost a mid eighties competition for a new FDF sniper rifle.

The Valmet design was later further developed by Sako into the successful TRG series of military sniper rifles. The TRG-S or M995 is the civilian version with both a standard (30-06) and a magnum (.338 LM) length receiver. It finally got too expensive to manufacture and was discontinued in 2002.
