A Morning with German Dogs and a German Gun
      #146401 - 23/11/09 01:54 AM

I placed this into the wrong topic area. This one is more like it!

I spent a nice morning over these two stoic German Shorthaired Pointers last Sunday and thought it apropos to bring along my Merkel 347SL to complete the theme. I’ve raised and trained two outstanding English Setters in the past and, since they’ve both passed on, I thought I’d give this noble Teutonic breed a try.
The dogs performed wonderfully. I’m buying a puppy from the orange collared Zusha in the early spring after the litter is born in February. We were out working these dogs in preparation for the upcoming NAVHDA trials and I was the designated shooter on these farm-raised birds. I will say the birds flew hard. My right barrel needed the backing of its left-sided twin on several occasions and a rooster teased out two shots before sailing harmlessly across the road.

All told, two roosters and eight Chukar were brought to the bag.

Jerry:
Very nice gun, birds and dogs. Looks like a nice day with a fast handling and light German SXS. My particular favorite. I Have a Nimrod T&L actioned sidelock from about 1924 and a Cristoph Funk SXS boxlock of about the same era. Both in 12Ga. The weights are 6 and aobut 6 1/2 lbs respectively.
My nimrod has taken a hand full of chucker and a few quail from me. Who knows previous to that. I have shot a lot of sporting clays as well. I have only hunted over dogs a couple of times. Great stuff to watch good dogs work.

Thanks, 88MauSporter

I really do love everything about hunting the uplands with good guns and good dogs. If someone gave me the choice to hunt a particular patch of timber where it was guaranteed to get a good shot at a nice 10 pt. buck, or to hunt a patch of timber where there's a chance at flushing a Ruffed Grouse, I would certainly take my chances on the Grouse.

Your guns seem like comfortable partners for you and have served you well. The Merkel has been with me since leaving the factory in Ulm Germany for 10 years and has been to that many states in pursuit of Grouse, Woodcock, Pheasant, and Huns answering the challenge presented by some very good dogs.

Bird hunting is fun when hunting over another man's championed well-trained dog, but it's still not as fun as hunting over your own modestly trained dog.

Great looking hunt Jerry..

Agree, upland hunting is a lot of fun...seems I have not be able to have enough time the last few years for as much as I would like---

Think you will really like the puppy--I have had Wire-hairs for about 20 years now and love them..

Take care

Ripp

Hallo Herr Jäger,

very beautiful dogs. I have a dog of the same breed, and it might interest you what kind of breed they really are. The black and white shorthairs are nowadays officially part of the German Shorthair breed. However, they are a unique breed to themselves, which has been forgotten.

I happened to come across a book from 1905, in which they were listed as 'Prussian Shorthairs'. Prussian, because the colors of Prussia were black and white. Furthermore, as opposed to the regular shorthairs, they have a healthy dose of pointer blood in them, which accounts for their color, somewhat more stout appearance and larger teeth. They are also have a better nose then the regular shorthair, but, true to their pointer heritage, will retrieve, but not as willingly as a normal shorthair. Of course they point perfectly.

Always lovely to hunt with dogs. Dogs double the pleasure.
