More Lee Speed Developments !
      #146377 - 22/11/09 03:45 PM

I have been building a Lee Speed copy for a while now & started with a Ex Mill action , then came across a butchered Lee Speed plain action & now a butchered engraved BSA/Lee Speed with the engraved mag & such .
So things are looking better & better for the effort I have put in .
I now have to make 3 more sporters as I have 2 BSA & 1 Lee Speed actions to work with , I will make one in 375 2 1/2 or 375/303 with a 20-21in barrel , I think , just need to find out more on mags !

Any way here are some pic's of my New - Old Lee ! !

There are a couple Lee Speeds in the upcoming Holt's auction worth looking at.
The estimates are silly - way low.

The serial number on the butt socket above "BSA&Co." is not original as you probably know. I believe it would have been only on the receiver ring (and of course bolt) originally.

An early aperture sight was fitted from the relief cut into the wood ahead of the butt socket, and the two holes were drilled and tapped for the SMLE safety spring holes that were normally used for that type of base. The type in this photo at the bottom perhaps: http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=151057&an=0&page=0#Post151057

If you take the rifle out of the stock, the two digit date of manufacture may be stamped into the bottom of the barrel similar to this "95" date.

Hmmm actually although mine is not marked as Lee Speed the serial number is on the bolt guide rail and does not appear on the reciever ring at all.

My Lee Speed's serial number is on the trigger guard, I have seen several others like it.

Quite right of course, and having looked at all the photos in this section, I should have remembered that too!

That is a guard number, not a serial number. It was applied by a retailer, not BSA or LSA.

Working with jc5 on the Lee Speed research project. Very interested in contacting former BSA gunsmiths and other employees.
