Old rifle cleaning rod thread size???
      #146210 - 19/11/09 10:50 AM

Hello guys,

I just bought an old two-piece rifle cleaning rod and the tip accepts the Parker Hale brushes that I ordered from Peter Dyson. The thread size is a mystery to me though. The major diameter is 0.198" but the pitch is something strange to me--close to 27 or 28 threads per inch but not a match to either. The thread form doesn't look quite like a standard 60-degree V style either. Do any of you know what these threads are? Is it likely to be a Whitworth or B.A. thread? I would like to make an adapter so that I can use standard brushes that are available in the U.S. but I'll need a tap in order to make this adapter.

Thanks,

Jim

It's probably a old whitworth thread. IIRC they used a 55 degree pitch not the standard 60.

Years ago I owned a couple of Parker Hale cleaning rods and also some jags and brushes that fit them.
I do remember that they used a different thread to other rods.
I would have thought they "could" be BSF, or B.A. which were sometimes/often used by the Poms way back when.
As you say, the combination of .198" and 27-28 tpi is a strange one.
Nearest BSF thread would be 7/32" X 28 tpi, but this has a major dia of 0.219" or thereabouts.
Could the major dia of your thread be worn or undersize by that much.

No 1 B.A. thread is 28.2 tpi and .2087" major dia.

No 12 UNF is 28 tpi and .216" major dia.

Here is a link to a heap of thread types, maybe it might help.

4Seventy,

I was looking on the Peter Dyson website earlier tonight and I came across a tap and die set for cutting Parker Hale rifle cleaning rod threads. The die is marked .200 PH which makes me think that this might be a strange proprietary thread since the thread is nominally 0.200" in diameter. Here is a link to where I found the tap and die set: http://www.peterdyson.co.uk/cgi-bin/sh00...%23aS330#aS330. Horribly expensive but this may be the only way to go if I can't find anhything else.

Regards,

Jim

Jim

How does US$3.68 for a Parker Hale to 8-32 tpi adaptor sound

OH22 converts .22 cal., male thread, Parker-Hale rods to 8-32 tpi, female.
OH30 converts .30 and larger, male thread, Parker-Hale rifle/pistol rods 8-32 tpi, female.
OHSG converts female end, Parker-Hale shotgun rods to 5/16" – 27 tpi, female.

Nope, it's a non-standard one. From back when standardised screw threads were a novel idea!

0.200" major diameter, Whitworth form [55deg, radiused crests/roots], maybe 26 tpi IIRC, as for BS Brass threads.

BSCycle thread form is 60 deg.
