Elk Season opens..
      #144586 - 28/10/09 01:53 AM

Opening weekend in Montana for general big game. A friend of mine for 20 years invited me to hunt with him on his ranch. Got there and there was a 2 younger hunters and a lady to go with us.

We did a bunch of drives with not much happening. On the final drive of the day we put my older friend, the lady and youngest boy to post the bottom of the draw which is about a mile long. The other guy and myself started at the top of the draw to push any elk down to them for a shot. As I was coming into the timber I spotted a single bull track in the snow. I sat down to glass the timber and noticed 3 bulls feeding out of a side draw heading up the mountain. I whistled to the other kid to come up and take a peak. I decided to make a play on them by moving down across the draw and up the other side of the mountain. That would put us on top of them with the wind in our face. About 45 minutes later we were above them and the bulls were feeding our way. We ranged them at 194 yards...on the count of 3 we both shot and had two bulls..with the other two heading down the draw..they met their demise with the posters at the bottom..It was a great day for everyone with the 14 year old getting his first elk..

Did some more testing of A-Frames--shooting my 300 Ultra-mag--180 A-frames -at about 3375fps--recovered two bullets--they weighed 167 and 164 grs...that is about 91% retention -which is remarkable when you think of the velocity I am shooting..

Thank you
Ripp

Hey, Ripp.....spectacular!!! That area looks a lot like where I've hunted in the Judith Mountains. Then again, most areas of Central Montana probably do! I have an uncle that ranches 8,000 acres near Grassrange.

Congratulations on a well-planned stalk and good shooting.

I actually have a big client over there--between him and his brothers they own the better part of 300,000 acres..not a bad spread..

How often you come out here?? if you are ever in the neighborhood give me a hollar--we can go throw a few back and bs about how great of hunters we are in Africa..

Ripp, I took my first Elk and my first Mule deer out there. I haven't been out in several years, but am planning a trip for next year. Big Game hunting is top notch out there, but I dearly love those hard flying pheasants, too. They don't get up in singles and pairs like they do out here; instead, they get up in bunches and are Hell Bent like rockets in a tailwind.

I can't even imagine having access to 300,000 acres. I'll certainly look you up. Thank you for the invite!

Maybe we can organize a small Forum hunt for 2010.

Peter

My offer to you as well--if you ever are heading this way--could arrange some hunting..no guarantees on game taken..but there is a guarantee on a good time...

thank you for the kind words..seems as though they are fewer and fewer recently..

thank you on that offer, one that i am going to take, it may just be a few years down the line, as i have to little free time on my hands as it is right now(not complaining though )

regarding me responding in kind, that is one thing i always try to do, as i might have to actually see you face to face and share a brew with you, this is the way i was brought up and that is the way i try to bring up my kids
allthough i have a brainfart every now and then, i try to appoligize and move on, worked good so far.

speak softly and carry a 577 light nitro

best

peter

By the way;

For you guys who do not or have not elk hunted.

This is a really staggering event, worthy of major kudos!!

Incredible, RIPP!

++++++++++++++++

Thank you 9.3 for the comments..

In the group photo--the older gentleman is 75--he has owned this ranch for 34 years..stated this was the first time more than 2 bulls were taken in one day since they owned the ranch...needless to say, he was quite pleased ..he had a severe heart attack a few years ago and is finding it more and more difficult to get around in the mountains...so a freezer full of elk is a good way of heading into the winter...
