Thinking of a 416 Ruger, any owners here?
      #144180 - 23/10/09 09:23 AM

Well the new gun bug has bit me yet again, and it was the big bore bug. Been thinking about getting my Mod. 70 375 H&H a big brother for a while now and just picked up Ruger 10 catalog, saw their Alaskan in 416 and it was love at first sight! Any of you fine folks have one or any experience with one? How about the caliber itself? Is it a worthy addition to the 416 family? Thanks.

Personally, I love the .416 caliber--as to the Ruger--everything I have read--in fact just another article this week..the claim is it matches the Remington and Rigby..however on the chronographed loads I have seen that is not the case..close --but does not match..about 100 fps less --maybe a bit more..I realize this is splitting hairs as the barrel is shorter on the Ruger rifle..but Rugers claim is that it does match the other .416's "with the 20" barrel"...more marketing BS..

Having said that, think it would be a dandy firearm..especially chasing buff in the jess or big bears in Alaska..

There are a few guys on this forum I have visited with that have them..and have nothing but good things to say about them..

Good luck with your purchase..

I have one and love it. Have put many rounds thru it, and it is one of the best shooting rifles I have in the safe. Took it to Zim and hammered a buff and ele with it, and everyone who shot it fell in love with it. Short, very handy in the jess, and absolutely great for an alaska rifle in the moisture.

I have one and it is terrific. I was in Tanzania with it and I took two buffalo, an elephant and an eland with it.

Performance and handling were flawless.

I am not an owner yet but have played with with the .416 a bit. Not pictured is the Weatherby but I did not care for the rifle so I sold it after a short period. I know the caliber was excellent.
Here are some images of options I have enjoyed.
I am not home with my reloading notes but these are pretty common and easy to find data.
The .416 AR was developed by Jeff Smith over on Accurate Reloading.

I too have been thinking of the new Ruger but it really does not fill any voids in any of these calibers. I would think it makes more sense to go with a rifle which really fits and then reload to suit your needs from light .416 Taylor to very heavy AR. The Rigby handles it all with a bit less pressure.
Of Course the Ruger RSM is a bunch better rifle in my opinion but heavy. My Taylor was inexpensive built on a vz24 and the AR was built on a Ruger 77 tang which is my favorite. My .416 RM was on a model 70 but I just didn't enjoy the idea of high pressure while getting ready for Africa.
I plan on handling the Ruger .416 a bit to see if it fits me and will probably decide then to own or not.

Frank

Frank,
Surely you can find a need for a stainless 20" Alaskan? Just swap the stock for a laminate off a Hawkeye, bed it and you'll have a stunning looker too!
Cheers...
Con
