Montana Antelope hunt report
      #144019 - 20/10/09 04:54 PM

Friend invited me this year to accompany him on his annual Antelope hunt. He's a good hunter and a good friend. He knew where to go and has been there before. I haven't.

We were hunting on 3 block management units covering 27,000 acres near Sand Springs. We saw three does and one buck. Every one we talked with only saw the three does. My friend killed one of the does. I looked at the map and saw a section with a small pond in the middle and no roads. I climbed a high peak and glassed the area. Saw a white spot, hiked for two hours and about 1 1/2 miles, got with in 250 yards of a smalll buck and missed my shot.

It started raining this morning and we were 12 miles from the nearest paved road...we came home! .

Any day hunting is better than any day working, even if you do miss!

From what I remember there was a large die off last year in thatcertain areas. Not sure and don't remember if it was desease or weather related but do remember areas of the state where this occurred. Having said that, in the areas I have been hunting, they are running around in herds of 30 to 50..or more...

Yep, that's what it looked like, for sure. I trusted my friend for preseason scouting report.

In his defense, he and the rancher involved both said there were plenty of antelope in the spring. The rancher said over the summer when the antelope normally scatter, there were less and less of them.

I also noticed very few deer and little sign.

Double D,

Think it was blue tongue that hammered them...

I was talking to my hunting partner tonight and he was a bit cross eyed at FWP. After finding the Hooker Ranch was booked solid for the season, he contacted FWP Miles City for alternate sites in the area, and FWP suggested this BMA. Why are they sending people to areas that have been hit by blue tongue?

If they didn't know then why not. Instead of sending hunters there they should be closing the area to hunting altogether to save the few animals left!

I'm glad I missed!
