No photos or video unfortunately, but years ago when I had my Brno 602 375H&H I used to load 220gn Hornadys as my pig hunting load. The projectiles were meant for the more sedate 375Win but performed as well as my 308Win on pigs.

The following is true and you guys should try it sometime. We did some bunny busting one afternoon - my mate driving the ute and me with the 375. Every time I shot a rabbit (aimed for it's chest) it would fragment and get blown 12 feet straight up into the air (the larger fragments that is). I shot a total of 4 rabbits and they reacted the same everytime. Maybe there was something wrong with us at that time but we thought it was really funny.

Classic, not plastic bolts? Ok, I'm in. Here are some photos of a Colorado 6x6 elk I killed in 1987 - my first elk. I just found these negatives and scanned them this morning.

This was a "poor-boy" hunt. No guide, and on public land.

We went in with backpacks. I slept under a spruce tree on a plastic tarp near my stand. No tent, and quite frosty! My hunting companions slept on the opposite side of a high ridge behind.

I had laid out a blind the evening before, setting up my ambush across an open meadow. Here's a photo of my blind, with the sleeping tarp now used as a ground cover to sit on that morning.

And here's a view of my open meadow ambush. There is a little beaver pond at the base of the far ridge. The beavers had kept the meadow open. My shot was to the far ridge, just below the aspens.

I killed the bull elk at first light with my Pre-64 Win. M70 .375 H&H topped by a 4x Redfield scope in Weaver mounts. The shot was 330 yards. I knew the distance because I had paced across the meadow the day before. My load was a max charge of IMR4064 behind the Speer 335 grain bullet, right at 3000 fps. Quite a load for long range elk.

Sorry no glamor shot of me sitting behind the propped-up elk. I was alone when the first photos were taken.

Here's how he lay before I even moved anything. Wow, was I excited!

And now positioned, again with my rifle. I've tagged the elk. The sun is just coming up behind, and you can see my shadow now.

It's no "Boone & Crockett" but for a "do it yourself" Colorado hunt in 1987 it made my world.

While I was struggling to remove the entrails my hunting buddies showed up. Here's a shot of me with my elk, "red handed" from trying to get the guts out of that big animal.

Here's a photo of our hunting group back at our base camp, with me holding my elk antlers. The photo was taken with the camera on timer mode and propped on a rock. Nobody else was in our camp or anywhere nearby.

The Pre-64 M70 is a classic bolt without a doubt.

Lots of great pics! And I love the feral dog shot. One time I saw a dog in the wilderness while deer hunting. I assumed it had gotten away from its owner and did not shoot it. Within 10 minutes I found a buck deer killed by the dog with a chunk of hind quarter chewed off. Since then I have never passed on an opportunity to shoot an unattended dog on public land while big game hunting.

98 Mauser .458 2" - 14 year old moose was 675 pounds in quarters - nice but not huge, range 95 yards, antlers regressing. Used 350 Hornady RN @ 2,260fps in over left eye, centered the brain, smashed 3 vertebrae, then exited out the back of then neck. - About 1983, 26 years ago. The forest floor moss is about 6" or more deep.

What a great series of pix. Took a whole pot of coffee to download on this handcrank dialup, but worth the wait.

Curl, GREAT story. That one is etched in the memory-banks for sure. I love your hide. I call them "Blitz Blinds".

Kalunga...you don't post enough! Great "bild". A lot of reality in that pic.

Daryl, you are quite happy with yourself, aren't you. You should be!

Oz, my neighbor's "Ruffy" disappeared about two weeks ago and that dog your are holding looks alot like...oh, forget it...

I have taken my 404J after goat and got a couple but they are goat and not pic worthy, at least I didn,t take one. Same deal with my 7x57 on a 1908DWM. But man is it fun and beautiful country. I do have a pic of that

Bit of a stretch with the aperture but there are little pockets that can be snuck up on. Besides a mate had his scoped 270 along and I had the scope for my 7x57in my day pack if I really wanted to use it. Have never taken the camera before an hunts so maybe will have to make it part of standard equipment now they are so small and light in the digital mode.

Love this thread. The rifles are great and the animals too. Think we need stories on all these rifles if they haven't already been told.
VonGruff, please do take a camera along. The scenery is spectacular, like your' rifles. Will have to get ovet there...one of these days. Cheers, Chris

Here is one of the four I got a couple of weeks back. 143yds for this one the others were out to 185+ and on the move. Aperture sight is excellent for this type of shooting.

Here's a couple of shots of my first elk shot in 2007 in northern British Columbia. With the help of his girlfriend, I called him out of the thick stuff and shot him at 19 paces.

The rifle is a Brazilian 1908 Oberndorf in 9.3X62

Not as impressive as some of those shown, but hunted with a classic little bolt gun in a classic little cartridge.
This was a Blesbok taken in '08 in the Eastern Cape.
Rifle is a Gibbs takedown in .256 Mannlicher (aka 6.5 x 53R)

Hi Adam.

Those Hyena are so cool.

Yeah, I'm pretty darn quick, but the photos were gone before I had a chance to transfer them to the NE.com server.

Maybe post again, or send them to me and I'll edit prior posts to insert them.

The rack on the moose shot by a Yukon hunter last fall has now been verified as a world record.
Giant moose

The moose shot by hunter Naef Heinz in Yukon last fall has been confirmed as a world record. (Photo courtesy Brian Naef)

Last month Heinz Naef of Dawson City and his fellow hunters had to travel more than 10,000 kilometres to Reno, Nev., to have the rack verified.

At the time the moose was harvested, the rack measured 191 centimetres. The moose itself was estimated to weigh 560 kilograms.

The rack had an official point score of 263 1/8. The previous record was 261 5/8.

it caused quite a stir at the border in Montana, Naef says.

"There was one border guard and he immediately went on the radio and said 'Come on guys, you've got to see this. You'll never see anything like this again.' All of a sudden there were 15 or 20 officers standing around just in awe."

Though there has been a lot of interest in purchasing the record rack, Naef says he isn't sure yet what he will do with it.

The rifle used? His normal rifle same as many hundreds of Canadians - a sporterized #3 Lee Enfield .303.

There are 2 things I have never taken hunting in my whole life.
One is a plastic stocked rifle. I have never even owned one.
#2 is a camera.

So I don't have a single picture of an animal I have killed. I have hunted since I was 8 years old (50 years now) and it struck me a bit hard when I read this thread, how I should have bought a camera a long time ago.
I have the memories, but when I look at the pictures other hunters have posted here it makes me feel as if I have made a big mistake in not ever thinking about photography.

Fox shot at about 100m as it was running, admittedly missed the first shot but got it on the 2nd.
I felt a little undergunned..

Hi Don,

Top 2 pics are my Custom M70 in 416RM, the next pic is a Kimber Select Classic in 25-06, the next is a 250-3000 Ruger and the last is a Sako in 375H&H.

And this one is my Winchester M70 in 9.3x62....

Cheers,

How do you like the Kimber Classic? And the Sako? Is the Kimber an 8400or a 84L? The 25-06 is a great cartridge.

I like the Kimber a lot. It is an 84L and has a bit darker timber in it to what I have seen lately. I don't care for really blonde coloured stocks.

Nice rifles EVERYONE in this thread! So nice to see people's successes!

Keep 'em coming.

Don - you asked Mark what rifles, i went to type pretty much the exact same line (even the "if you don't mind me asking" part!) last night but fell asleep!

It's not all large bore rifles and big game!
1st squirrel of the season Saturday evening.
CZ452FS .22 LR. Range 42 yards.
He was sitting on a branch stub right next to the trunk about 30 feet up eating a walnut.
This time of year with a lot of leaves still on the branches hunting consists of taking a couple of steps, stop, listen and glass the branches.
I heard this one cutting the nut and stalked in until I could get a good head shot.

Thank you sir. I built it about 5 years ago and so far it has a caribou and a moose to it's credit. I was blessed to get to know Michael Petrov and visit with him several times before his passing. He was the foremost authority on all things Whelen and inspired me to built the 400. Its been my most enjoyable rifle project ever.

The 450/400 made its stellar reputation with 400 grain bullets at 2150 fps. The 400 Whelen will do the same in a magazine rifle.

Absolutely. I'd hunt anything in the world with it given the opportunity. I even have some Barnes Super Solid 400 grain bullets in case I get invited to cull some elephant or cape buffalo or suddenly become wealthy enough to afford a safari.

I've been out several times looking for a bear but haven't gotten in on one for a shot yet. I've no qualms at all about using the 400 Whelen for a grizzly.

mart - is your rifle chambered for the improved case, or simply necked up for the standard .400 Whelen?

Daryl,

The 400 Whelen in its original or standard form was on an improved case. The only versions that used a non-improved standard 30-06 case were done by gunsmiths who did not understand what Colonel Whelen had designed in the 400. Michael Petrov's excellent articles on the 400 Whelen are easily found online and a worth while read and do a great job of explaining the 400 Whelen's history.

The 30-06, 35 Whelen and 375 Whelen all share a common .441 shoulder diameter. The 400 Whelen as The Colonel designed it has a .458 diameter shoulder. There are other variants with a .461 shoulder and of course the Brown-Whelen with the shoulder moved slightly forward and a .461 shoulder. I'm not sure what the dimensions on the 411 Hawk are but all three cases, the 400 Whelen, the 400 Brown-Whelen and the 411 Hawk are so close in capacity that load data is interchangeable.

My 400 is the standard 400 Whelen with the .458 shoulder.

Mart

Other then kills with AR15s and FALs nearly all my kills have been with classics. I have never owned a sporting rifles with a plastic stock. I have nothing against them, but they just don't interest me at all.
Here is one of the VERY few pictures I have of a kill. I shot this young buck Prong-Horn 4 days ago.

I have hunted for over 50 years in many states and a few other countries, but until a few years ago I never owned a camera. And in the last few years I have forgotten to take it on my hunts.

So this is very rare for me.
But the little carbine is a classic for sure, and I made the shot from 177 yards and killed it with a neck shot.

Hello Ash,

The elephant was shot with a frontal brain shot at 10 paces in thick cover, very exciting to say the least....I used a Woodleigh 500 gr solid that went through the brain and lodged in the neck vertebrae. The elephant dropped at the shot.

The Hippo was shot with my 375 H&H Win 70, when I took the picture I only had the 470 available so it gets the glory.

Hi,

My best Red Deer with my Mauser 1935 7x57 and Schmidt&Bender 1,5-6x42 R4.

Another non typical Red Deer and one of my sons with that rifle and an old but still perfect Zeiss Diatal DA 4x32.

Some of many with my Winchester 70 pre-64 .375 H&H.

With my wife. First Red Deer with my BRNO ZKK 600 (1967) 9,3x62. A selective one.

Wow, some superb Red deer you got there. Very interesting countryside which looks quite difficult to hunts. Similar to Scotland in that it is quite hilly with no trees and low lying bush, the obvious difference is that Scotland is cold and wet whereas where you hunt looks cold and dry. Very nice rifles as well, thanks for posting.

Matt.

Like Rule303 said, top kit and great trophy.
I also like 1.5-6 and straight 4 power scopes.
My H&H 7x57 has an old battered 6# Zeiss that works great.
My next custom 7x57 will have a new S&B 6#
No need for these modern sniper scopes in the hunting field imo.
All mine have heavy4 and 1 reaticules

PH. Great hunting territory, nice classic rifles, good game/trophies harvested and hunting family; happy man in short!

Agree, ozhunter.
Almost all my scopes are either 4x or 1,5-6x, but one Zeiss Victory 2,5-10x50. And all with Nr. 1 or classic Nr. 4 Ret. Also, I like first focal planes reticles in my variable power scopes.
Best!
