Australia & New Zealand : Australia: Government rejects crocodile-hunting plan
on 2009/10/3 1:31:05
The Federal Government has rejected a plan to allow the safari hunting of salt-water crocodiles in the Northern Territory.

The rejection, announced by Environment Minister Peter Garrett today, is a setback for the NT Government's efforts to foster indigenous employment and enterprise.

It will disappoint Aborigines, professional hunters and pastoralists, who had strongly supported the territory's draft crocodile management program that included the trial hunting of 25 big crocodiles a year over five years.

Safari hunters were expected to pay up to $25,000 for safari hunts.

Mr Garrett said he believed safari hunting was not a suitable approach for the responsible management of crocodiles.

He said in considering the Government's proposal he had sought to ensure “a balance between environmental protection and appropriate management of these animals in the Top End".

The NT Government asked the Commonwealth to allow the hunting of crocodiles with a minium size of 3.5 metres.

Hunters would use rifles fitted with telescopic sights.

Shots aimed at the head would have had to be taken at no more than 50 metres from the animal.

An indigenous guide would back up the hunter “with arms to shoulder” to finish off the crocodile in the event the hunter only wounded it.

Crocodiles have been protected in the NT since 1971.

Since then, their numbers have grown to more than 70,000, making it dangerous to enter many of the territory's waterways.

He's in for a flogging if he sets foot on their lands. I hear the Boards of Management local members for Kakadu and Garig Gunak Barlu NPs aren't very happy.

What's so bloody stupid is the crocs will get shot anyway
- and eaten.

So that's $25,000 x 25 - $625,000 that pastoralists and TO's will miss out on but the animals won't stay alive.

Short sighted, appeasing those that don't know what really goes on anyway (legally) in the real outback world of the NT.

Why issue tags to pastoralist ?

Kamilaroi
I very much doubt it would be allowed in Kakadu anyway.
Problem crocs are dealt with very quickly anyway.

Garrett is a fool. One reason he is so rarely allowed out in public. His "environment" portfolio is only half the portfolio.

G'Day Fella's,

The Best I can say is;
It appears that the Labor Party's Environmental Policy is based on Emotion not Science at worst and at best, it fluctuates between these two methods of assessing any environmental situation/problem.
From what I can gather, some "Drop Kick Turn Coat" called Steve Erwin (or his relatives), is still influencing government decisions/policy but now, from the grave!

If any animals need to be managed and the only practical way is by Hunting and killing hem, get willing individuals to pay for this. It's Common Sense but then Common Sense is no longer Common!

What a joke Peter Garret is!!!
He should have stuck to Trying to Sing but then he's just another Turn Coat to the miss named EnvironMENTAL Lobby! As far as a lot of them Loonies (and a lot of normal people ) are concerned, he picked up his current job, under False Pretenses (for differing reasons of course)!!!

Having met him on business matters I can say he's no fool but very mindful of govt media advisors and lobby groups.

One more reason for Marion Scrymgour to give the NT (Labor) govt the flick. The TO's are mightily pissed off and the Kakadu BoM is the same. (Been following it in National Indigenous Times for abt a year or so)

It seems no matter which country, once something is labeled "endangered" all common sense and traditional conservation practices are thrown out in favor of hand-wringing feel good and politically corect regulations. Doesn't bode well for the future, but hopefully the pendulum will swing once again to common sense, if the facts are allowed to be presented and not just emotions.

He has always been known as highly intelligent,
no one is disputing that.

You only have to look back at some of his interviews
as lead singer of Midnight Oil to see he is no dummy.

We will see less common sense , not more as the population becomes more City based & people judge real life from the media !

Also , I have never come across a "Indigenous guide" unless they mean any person born in Australia & not what some would call a "Aboriginal" native to Australia , not in a professional sense !

G'Day Fella's,

I personally believe that the Crocodiles of Northern Australia, will have the final say in this matter. That way the blame for the deaths, will come back onto the decision makers!

I just hope the people that these Croc's kill isn't (me or) some one that I know!!!

I suspect Garrett thinks this is an easy way to polish up his flower-sniffer credentials. After opening up new uranium mining opportunites and failing to achieve anything else in the conservation area, he had to kick a goal somewhere.

Methinks that the main "reality" that Garret and his cronies are intereseted in.... are the swinging votes in key marginal urban electorates...... The same electorates which produce the greatest perecentage of "green" votes, but have the least contact with the natural environment.

BTW both are useful if you know the "pressure point".
Julia is a long term good value pollie and Garrett is tutored by Keating, (that media Mahler afficionado and enthusiast of antique French clocks).

As much as I don't like some of Julia Gillard's / Labour's politics, she shits over some of the male politicians and is really showing them up.

My view is, even if you don;t like the PM/Dep PM / XYZ Minister, you are far better off having a Senior Politician
as your member than some back bencher !!!
