Pedersoli kodiak .72 two balls
      #143025 - 02/10/09 08:24 AM

Gents,

I goofed up and loaded the second bullet on top of the first. It's only one charge of 110 grains of 777 but two 535 grain bullets.

What should I do?

I've been forced to shoot two 50cal balls before with 75 grains of powder. Nothing bad happened.

But I'm staying out of this conversation because we're talking about two completly different creatures

I've had bad thoughts about doing the very same thing with mine.......so far so good. Daryl or one of the other muzzleloader gurus will be able to help, I'm sure.

Every muzzle loading shooter should have a ball puller in his possession at all times. They are available from most muzzle loader shops. They are like a wood screw and attach to your ramrod. Some shooters have one permanently mounted to a metal rod with a "T" handle to assist in screwing the puller into the ball. I would HEARTILY suggest you get one as, besides situations like you are in, a puller can come in very handy if you find yourself with a loaded rifle that (for whatever reason) cannot be shot.

Some time ago I forget a patch in one barrel of my Kodiak so cap fire never fire the charge.
I pulled the ball.

My sugetion is:
As Sgt sais, get a bullet puller, fix it to a metal rod.
Then tie the rod to a tree or pole and pull the rifle back.
You can "kill the powder with WD40 or other oil throu the the nipple hole but then you have to pull both balls.
Warning!!!! use a muzzle protector.

Hope this hepls.
Martin

Get one of the CO2 dischargers for muzzleloaders....works like a charm. A full CO2 cartridge will blow out both balls and the powder with no problem. Spray a shot of WD-40 or simular down the barrell for some extra slip. you could also take the nipple out and use an air blow gun with a rubber tip connected to a compressed air line. MAKE SURE THE BARRELL IS POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION. Those balls will come rocketing out the barrel.

Longfeather is absolutely correct - after 40 years of shooting ML's and not useing one of them, we had an oportunity to try the C02 discharger and it was quite incredible. The spent ball bounced around the shop a bit, so make certain you have a good backstop. Tightly loaded balls will develop some velocity.

A charge of 110gr. of powder and 2 balls will not blow up that 12 bore - however, it will kick a bit more than normal. We've all fired off a double ball load - no problem, and at considerably higher pressures than that charge will develope in the Kodiak. Now- the MOST important thing to do, if you are going to fire it off, is to make damn certain the second ball is on the top, touching, rammed against the first ball. There cannot be ANY air space between them, or a ringed or burst barrel will be the reward.

The ball puller is, of course a necessary item for everyone's 'tool bag', which should also contain a small screw driver, jag, spare nipples or leather pads and flints, nipple wrench, even spare main springs and mainspring vice. Best method for pulling a ball, is to have a drill set into a bore sized brass collar that screws onto the rod tip. The drill is sized to drill a small hole into the ball, so that the ball screw doesn't expand the ball too tightly in the bore as it's turned into the ball. this works to perfection, especially if you're using WW alloy balls. The bore sized brass collar is to drill a hole perfectly centered in the bore. If it isn't centered, it or the screw might attempt to cut into the ball against the side of the bore, damaging the rifling. Without the proper tools for removal, I'd shoot it out, and get that rifle cleaned. Then - I'd invest in a C02 discharger. One small C02 cantiner has enough gas to dispel many 'objects' from the bore. The good ones use only a small amount of gas, just like a pellet gun, only a bit more gas than that.

I took it to the rifle range today and shot out the two balls (1070 grains). Put two thumb sized holes in the target at 50 yards about 10" apart.

Bonanza you are a lucky man, no other way to say it! If that ball had not been down against the first one the story may have had a different ending.

What you need to do is, find a steel tube about the size of your ramrod, Take a long large wood screw, cut the head off it, and stick about 1 inch of the head end in the tube, and braze it into the tube. Then weld a T-handle on the other end. With this you can push the screw end down the barrel, and twist the T-handle to turn the screw into the lead of the ball, and pull it out. I wouldn't recommend shooting two balls out of the same barrel seated over a full load of powder, too often.

................................

PS: I have several muzzle loading double rifles, and I took a wooden dal rod and turned about 1 1/2" of it down to fit in the muzzle of the barrels, and turned down the other end into a ball and painted the ball red. When I get ready to load, I place the red top in one barrel till the other one is loaded, then place the balltop in the loaded barrel while I load the other one. The red ball on the plug is larger that the outside of the barrels so it can be seen when the rifle is shoudered so you don't fire the rifle with the plug in one of the barrels.

Dugaboy,

Thanks for the post and concern. I took Daryl’s advice about no gap between the two. I literally hammered the second ball onto the first with an aluminum ram rod for a very tight fit.

I also go a PM from someone with a Pedersoli Kodiak .72 who shot out a large (180 grains) double charge: powder/wad/ball/powder/wad/ball with no ill effect.

HOWEVER, I have ordered from Cabelas a CO2 discharge kit.

I have it out for muzzle loader hunting. I forgot how damn nice these rifles are. I’m so glad I got one. The best $800 double rifle period.

I have a Pedersoli 58 cal double, and I was out at cabela's a few months ago, and handeled a .72 cal and almost baught it on the spot. What kind of accuracy do you get, and how well does it regulate?

There are several places in Texas where a public land license allows one to hunt but only allow bow, and arrow, Shotgun or muzzle loader. I hunt almost exclusively with my double rifles, and though I had several muzzleloaders, I didn't, at the time, have a double barreld muzzle loader, so I traded a brand new Ruger No1 458 win mag for the Pedersoli, so I could hunt these places with a double rifle.

...........................Good hunting!

Mine shoots apart.

With 100 gr of 777 it will put 4 rounds in 3" X 3" sqaure at 50 yards.

With 150 gr of 777 it is 3" X 3.5" vertical rectangle

I currenty have crappy patches and think I could do better with the correct patch.

I'd like to put a better sight on it.

UPDATE (2009-10-04)

Perdersoli does make a much better rear sight for the Kodiak. I'll find how to get one.

DUGABOY1,
I have one of the .72s and as I've posted on some of the other forums, mine regulates perfectly at 30 yards (farthest I've shot it on paper) with 120 gr Goex FFG, 715 round balls from Tracj of the Wolf, regular 2" flannel cleaning patch lubed with Bore Butter. I put a Marbles #30 rear barrel sight on mine. The original sights shot too high even folded all the way down.......I didnt like em anyway. I'll part with mine for 750.00 delivered and I'll throw in a traditional leather sling from Jeff's outfitters. I've only had this rifle about a year and a half and fired only 40 rounds through it. Not a thing wrong with it, just got a hankering for something else right now.
