A few years back i took a mate for a walk in hunt for deer and he ended up nailing a hind with his latest rifle which is a .458W necked down to .375 using 300 gr Nos part`s,i had a few shots myself and found it suprisingly mild to shoot,Q`s is ( i have lost contact with owner) what is thought of this combination? anybody know about it at all and have any figures comparable to any other cals.Or is it known as a semi-commercial cal?

Gryphon

Sounds like a necked down .416 Chatfield-Taylor - which is a semi-wildcat of the 458 Win Mag necked down to .416.

It reportedly is not far behind the H&H magnum in terms of velocity.

In a shorter action sounds like a very nice rifle/calibre combination.

Thinking of buidling one?

Mate Shane told me its a 458 winny mag necked down,no not thinking of building one--no need at all for that sort of stuff in Oz at least for me that is mate.

Gryphon

Don't knock the .375/.458 Win Mag. It must be similar to a 376 Steyr and in a light shorter action in a reasonably light rifle, better for carrying a lot and shooting a little, would have to make a great Sambar rifle.

Nitro i certainly wasnt knocking this cal as in the right place or hands it would do the job on most if not all game, its just that using what i have puts `em down for the returns of mild recoil, ease of use, ammo available everywhere, projectiles in all sizes and is suited to a lot more game here in Oz, also suited for shooting a lot, hence me saying no use here at least for me.Yes i would have one in my rack for that unexpected trip overseas if somebody wants to donate one but there is nothing in Australia that I WANT that i cant take now mate.

The cartridge in question would be the 338/375 Chatfield Taylor. It was originally made by necking 338 Win Mag cases up to 375 but can also be made by necking down 458 Win Mag brass.
A mate had one done on a stainless Ruger about 10 years ago and it could produce 375 H&H velocities no problem, and with a lot less recoil but at a higher chamber pressure.
The main idea was to equal H&H velocities in a 30-06 length action.

4seventy is right about this cartridge. Properly loaded, it will give .375 H&H performance in a standard-length action. It is highly regarded, and very accurate!!
