Best caliber for the action
      #142007 - 14/09/09 12:13 PM

I just bought a military 7 mm 1908 Mauser in almost new condition, with all parts from bolt to trigger with the same number. I sended it to my gunsmith to be transformed in a custom hunting rifle, but I am in doubt about the best caliber for the action. The .308 Win seems to be a little shorty, meanwhile the .270 Win looks too long. Which one of those two is more adaptable for this action? Thank you for your help.

Jano

If it's almost new and all numbers match, keep it as is
and buy another one to butcher.

Not many left around the world that are like nw with matching numbers.

As to calibre - 7mm is a fine classic.

You should be able to fine tune the existing barrel, trigger and sights and have a nice stock made up.
I'm sure the likes of Rigby use to do this.

9.3x57 is perfect for about any North American Game. You can used sized down 225gr. Hornady's at 2,550+ fps for deer and black bear, on up to 270 to 286gr. Speer, Privi's, Hornady's, Normas, etc for heavier game. My 94 action easily does 2,200fps with 286gr., 2,300fps with 270's, 2,450fps with 232's and 2,550fps with 225's. Large game is easy picking to 300yards and if you want to extend the range on deer and antelope, 400 is possible with the lighter bullets with a bit of practise.
Too, the 9.3x57 has very moderate recoil and is easily shot by any man and most women.
A .375 on the same case (or improved 57mm. case) would also be a great choice. Hornady makes dies for it.

Jano, leave it as a 7x57, it will do all that is needed. My own cuaton 7x57 is on the 1908 DWM althouth it had been "storterised" when I bought it.

YES! Leave it alone! Get an action and sell the nice military 1908 for those who appreciate them!
I nice action and you can choose the caliber you want. The 7x57 is super for all around hunting.
