How far from the eye should the rear wide V express sight be mounted?

Your call, and I'm sure you will get a slew of opinions here, but the closer it is mounted to the eye, the fuzzier it will be. i.e., the farther away from the eye, in general, the clearer it will be.

Remember tho, that the farther away it is, the closer to the front sight which means the shorter the sight radius. In general, a short sight radius is more difficult to shoot well than a long sight radius. The GUN, technically, is no less accurate, but it is more difficult to shoot accurately if it has a very short sight radius.

Might add that if you are having a sight fitted, you can play around with it before fitting, taping it to the barrel at various places and sighting it whereupon you can make a judgment of your own based on your own eyes at least as far as sight picture is concerned, if not accuracy {without shooting}.

I agree totally with 9,3`s statement. If You don`t consider a peep sight this is the way to go.

A sight for fast, snap shooting should be farther down the barrel, towards the muzzle. If the sight is for deliberate, finely placed shots, it should be closer to the eye.

Funny this topic came up now.

I'm getting ready for bear and have been shooting my Custom/Bubba'd "Backpacker" CZ550 9.3x62 with 19-inch bbl.

The sights on this thing are my favorite type for bear chasing, consisting of a REALLY wide rear notch and thick post front. And with this L'il Stubby, very short sight radius.

Highly visible, about like a "fighting" sight on a pistol, and not what I'd call a target setup, unless of course the target is a running, climbing, charging or merely tree-hugging bear...

Here's thing, sight hood moved forward to show the sight.

Wide V's can be mounted closer than around any other type of open sight, however as one ages, the 'best' distance changes as well. Mount it where you can see it - masking tape to hold it will show you where.

The last part of 9.3's post is a great suggestion.

When I build a hunting rifle for someone, I like to get my customers to try different rear-sight positions to see what distance best suits their eye. I use a sight dummy of black card and tape it to the barrel. Then I get them to mount the rifle and quickly sight on an object about 30 odd yards off, and move the “sight” as necessary to where the customer has their best sight picture. That distance from the end of the butt plus an inch is where the sight is then positioned, in just right place for that individual.

I have generally found that people over 45 need the rear sight some-where around 24 to 26 inches from the end of the butt, and those younger can usually accommodate anything up to about 4 inches less. Something to do with younger eyes being able to focus better and quicker than us older folk

Regards

Alex

What were you thinking might be significantly different?

The way the sight is used, particularly on double rifles or DG rifles
